1965 Seragi Shiba 1.0

Post-war Japan was a country of scarcity- consumer goods were expensive, and people were advised to save money and buy only what they needed. So, if you needed to move something from A to B? You needed a Seragi Shiba.



The tiny Shiba van is powered by a 498cc I3 engine, producing 22.5 horsepower at 5800 rpm. However, it weighs just 458 kg (1000 lbs), meaning this is more than enough to push it to a top speed just over 60 miles per hour (100 km/h). The engine is mounted in the rear, and it is rear-wheel drive (RR layout). The engine is coupled to a 4-speed manual transmission, and it even has a lockable differential in case of rough terrain.



The Shiba was constructed with lightness, space-saving and economy in mind. As such, it really is very small, and is easily dwarfed in size by most regular cars. Also, being from the 1960's, the Shiba offers very little in crash protection - you'd best rely on driving skills and not crashing, otherwise your survival chances are admittedly not-great.

The Shiba is quite easy to drive, regardless of being rear-engined. It can still slip its tail out if you drive it hard enough, but it is otherwise very forgiving. It is still an old car though, and will behave as such, especially considering its cross-ply tries.
