1970 Gavril Machina 3-V8 1.0

American super car

It's the late 1960's and early 1970's, and American muscle cars are at their peak in popularity in the U.S.A. The Barstow was an absolute performance machine that dominated every other car in popularity, and the Moonhawk was quickly gaining an iconic status. At the time, Gavril was an extremely competitive company and always tried to make cars that fulfilled the aspects of almost every single car on the market at the time. back then, they covered almost as many types of cars as they could. From trucks to muscle cars to family sedans and even personal luxury vehicles. However, there was still one type of car that they didn't fulfill yet: the supercar.

That was until the January of 1969 when Gavril unexpectedly showcased the Machina at the West Coast auto show.....and people loved it.

Even though it had shaky reviews in its first 2 years of production, it would quickly gain a reputation throughout the 1970s and early '80s as one of the greatest American cars....ever made. The styling was simplistic, yet beautiful, The V8 in the middle of the car was reliable and well built, It was a blast to drive around corners, it had a top speed of over 170 mph, and it was EVEN decent on gas making about 18-20 mpg city, and 24-27 mpg highway. However, there was one aspect of this car that I personally believe is the most important: its price. The Machina throughout the '70s had 6 base trims: the 1-I6 2-I6 3-I6 1-V8 2-V8 and 3-V8, with the most expensive only costing around 33,000 dollars in today's money.

This meant that it was miles cheaper than any other supercar imported into the U.S. Civetta outright accused Gavril of intentionally underpricing the car despite its target demographic. The problem with this accusation was that Civetta thought they were trying to sell the Machina to the upper-class supercar lovers. when in reality, they intended to sell the Machina to people who only had the money to buy muscle cars. The idea was that the Machina would try to appeal to muscle car lovers while at the same time trying to prove it had more benefits than a muscle car. I mean why have a car that only has a top speed of about 120-130 mph, has a horrendous amount of wheelspin, and is sluggish around corners. When you could instead have a car that has a top speed of 170+ mph, has a great launch, and can absolutely nail it around corners for the exact same amount of money?

Except...they didn't want the Machina, it turns out that in its first 2 years of production a lot of people still would rather drive muscle cars than the Machina...until the gas shortage came. Yes, it turns out that because the Machina already had a decent enough fuel economy, Gavril didn't need to aggressively change the Machina's power output for the changing fuel economy regulations. All Gavril really did was cut the production of the special high-performance trim models until the gas shortage was over. It wasn't until the mid-'80s that Gavril finally ended the production of the Machina, and in that amount of time, Gavril managed to sell over 900,000 Machinas.

But then...in the early 2010s, Gavril was all of the sudden pissed off about something. You wanna know what it was? It turns out that people were getting away with selling base model Machinas online for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Usually, this wouldn't be a big concern for other automotive manufacturers. However, Gavril still wanted to enforce the Machinas legacy as a dailyable, and relatively affordable car. So you wanna know what they did? They actually took matters to the supreme court to try and forcefully keep the prices of base model Machinas around 20-30,000 dollars online and to this day it remains as one of the most unbelievable supreme court cases ever held by an automotive manufacturer.
