GNU 1200 TT aka Neue Prinz (1967-1971)

After various license-based Italian models for Western German market, in 1962 the GNU corporation decided to make its first original model. The inspiration came from rear-engined rear-drive US classic Declasse Corsair, which was very controversal in America, but very simple and stylish for that era. GNU designers actually scaled-down that model on the 2.2m wheelbase and model "Kleine Prinz" was born.
Ironically, Soviets (precise Ukrainians) had developed its Kleine Prinz copycat, but with even more simple cues and 968cc flat-4 boxer for Eastern European and Soviet market. It was cheap, crude and reliable, but very popular on less-developed Soviet roads.
GNU designers wanted to upscale the Kleine Prinz design and facelift it. In 1967 the model got the longer 2.5m wheelbase, the new frontal design and simpler interior solutions, this time combined with plastic parts. The car was still RWD and rear-engined and moderate competitor in "middle-class family" European markets. The production took part until mid 1971, when GNU company was absorbed into Familiewagen holding.
Neue Prinz models were also produced in Belgium, Yugoslavia and Spain, but never reached the name as the competitors.
This car is inspired by most underrated 1960's German family car, the NSU 1200 aka Typ 110, and NSU Prinz at the lesser extent.
