After the Berlin Wall fell in '89, Begleiterin Motors did what it deemed necessary to survive, which was to install a 1.1L I4 and a 5 speed manual transmission with a floor shifter from a Western hatchback, a radio, and new seats in order to appeal to Western markets. However, because everything else about the car was still from the 1950s, no one in their right mind bought one, which lead to Begleiterin Motors to close it's doors in 1991.
