In 1980, Royal Motors realized they were losing market share to not only the Killrob and Gavril, but also imports from Japan. It was small, and slow, but was still a market share loss that Royal didn't like. The FSR and FRR were ALL sorts of craze amongst younger car owners, but a survey found they wanted a lower price Calvinator, not just lower price Royals. Gone were the days of buying a new 1968 CRM Model C R Warrior for just $3000 to $5000 (because it was the 1980, not 1967, but also because inflation). The avg. price of a Calvinator rose from $4000 in 1965 to $9500 in 1980. A new car was needed to lower the avg. price of Calvinator.
The Calvinator team began in 1981 after reverse engineering an 80 Toyota and an 81 Honda, and learned some valuable info on designing their cheaper Calvinator. In 1982, the car was shown off at the Dearville Autoshow being hosted at the Killrob Industries MASSIVE Showroom (its like the IKEA for cars, though Calvinator built a bigger one in 1985). The vehicle was the most popular to the younger drivers ages 16 to 25. It was also awarded the title for lowest cost to operate.
In mid 1982, the 1983 Calvinator Commuter Mk.Is was released, and it was selling like hot cakes. In 1983 ALONE, Calvinator sold 9 million units. The initial price at launch was $2500. ANYONE could afford this car. But the real surprise was when you stomped the gas.
The car is powered by a tiny 90ci Inline 4 engine, but has 245 BHP. And it goes 150 mph and has a 0 to 60mph in just 7.14 seconds (it aint a Warrior, but its pretty fast and powerful for the 80's). But Calvinator didn't just want it to be fast (ish), they wanted it to be modular. They wanted their car to be modified. That was a big thing in 1982 and on, modifying your car. There are some that are low riders, some that are DONKS, some that are Drag Cars pulling 6 seconds or faster on the quarter mile, and some are Street Racers. Calvinator quickly made a more powerful police version shortly after, but we can get to that later.
This car was cheap, had low cost of operation, was fast, and designed to be modified. AND its one of the Legacy Models that is covered by Royal Motors' new HOT ROD Warranty, which you can learn about on the Automation steam forums under Royal's Announcement Thread. Basic Sum, though, certain cars, both legacy and current, that are modified are still covered in warranty to ALL drivers that own one of the covered cars, but its one time. But the car gets replaced part for part, and if RM can't find the part, you get a better one.
