Dust & Dirt 1.0

Live dust, mud and water on the D-Series: paint, tyres and trim.

  1. Dust & Dirt
    Dust & Dirt

FOR THE GAVRIL D-SERIES ONLY (for now). Support for more vehicles is coming in future updates.

Drive off the road and your D-Series actually gets dirty, the way a real truck does. Each wheel throws dirt onto the panels around it, a fine film settles and climbs the body the longer you stay off-road, and the dirt takes the colour of the ground you're driving on.

    FEATURES

    - Real dirt, drawn live. Dust and mud build up as actual texture on the paint: splatter behind the wheels, settled dust on the sills, and a film that creeps higher the longer you're out.
    - Matches the ground. Red dust in Utah, pale sand on the dunes, brown mud in the woods. The dirt takes the colour of whatever surface threw it.
    - Matte, not a sticker. Dirt kills the paint's gloss where it sits, so it looks like dirt on paint rather than a decal. Wet mud stays glossy until it dries.
    - Water crossings. Drive into water and everything below the waterline goes dark and wet, with a splashed edge that follows the angle you went in at. It dries off slowly afterwards.
    - Tires and wheels. The tread packs with dirt while the sidewall holds a lighter film that fades toward the rim, and the white lettering stays readable. Water rinses the tread and leaves a pale silt bloom on the sidewall as it dries.
    - Black trim too. Bumpers, flares, steps, snorkel and underbody pick up dust at the same pace as the panels beside them.
    - Body variants. Works on the regular cab, the crew/extended cab, and with a bed canopy fitted.

    INSTALLATION

    1. Put the downloaded zip in your mods folder, or install it through the in-game repository. Don't unzip it.
    2. Start the game and spawn a Gavril D-Series.
    3. In the parts/paint menu, choose the Dust & Dirt paint design. Expect a big frame drop or stutter for several seconds while it sets up. This is normal and settles down on its own.
    4. First time only: the mod builds the dirt for your tyres, wheels and trim, then needs one restart. Quit, start the game again, and apply the Dust & Dirt paint again. After that it just works.
    5. Go off-road.

Driving on tarmac or in the rain slowly washes the dirt off. Resetting the vehicle cleans it completely.

    GOOD TO KNOW

    - This version only works on the Gavril D-Series. The dirt placement is set up for each vehicle by hand, and more vehicles will be added in future updates.
    - Applying the paint can cost you a lot of frames for several seconds while the mod builds the dirt textures for the body, tyres, wheels and trim. It's a one-off each time you apply the paint and goes away once everything is loaded.
    - Only vehicles wearing the Dust & Dirt paint are affected. Nothing else on the map is touched.
    - All four wheels share one dirt texture, so they get dirty together.
    - The dirt is drawn by the game's built-in browser, the same system the dashboards use, so lower-end PCs may notice a small ongoing performance cost while driving too.
    - Glass and the roll cage are left clean on purpose.

Really neat concept, however the mod seems to break the textures on, of all things, LJ74's Dodge Charger, to the point that *uninstalling* this mod causes a bunch of textures on the Charger to break beyond repair (Uninstalling the mod doesn't fix it, reinstalling the Charger doesn't fix it, reinstalling the *game* doesn't fix it, among other solutions).

Awesome work! I was actually trying to create a dirt effect on cars myself (including rain and wheels) and make it universal for any car or mod... but I ran into some issues and haven't figured it out yet. Could I ask if you are using the Decal Editor (dynamic material) approach here, or did you build something completely custom?

PS By the way, I'm working on terrain deformation right now, and it would be awesome if, in the future, there were mods that could close the loop—making the car get dirty directly from driving through deformed mud, just like in Spintires.

Really cool mod! The dynamic dirt and dust effects make driving off-road feel much more immersive, especially with the dirt changing depending on the surface you're driving on. I also really like the water effects and how the vehicle gradually dries afterward.

For a first release, this is seriously impressive. Looking forward to seeing support for more vehicles and future improvements!
