FIVA 6615 (AB86) 1.0

5.6 tons of pure Italian armor

  1. proudengineer
In the early 80s, Esercito Italiano placed a tender for an indigenously made, wheeled armored fighting vehicle/infantry carrier. FIVA and Arnaldo, has won that tender among 3 rivals and started the development of the vehicle around 1981. Automotive components, such as engine, transmission, axles, brakes and electricals would be supplied from FIVA; armored body, weapons and other protection components would be supplied from Arnaldo, the leading defense industry company of Italy.

FIVA's parent company TIAF and Arnaldo had a tight cooperation for building armored vehicles since 1930s and as a duopoly on defense industry of Italy, they built hundreds to thousands of light and medium tanks, armored and unarmored wheeled fire support and recon vehicles to serve in Regio Esercito. This duopoly has served Italy's wheeled warfare doctrine even after WW2.

First full-size running prototype of the new armored vehicle has internally called "6615" and completed in September 1983. It was destroyed in end of 1984 by IED explosion with two fatalities. During development stage, about to use in the mobility and protection tests, 5 prototypes have been built with addition of turbocharger and 5 speed automatic transmission until 1986. These vehicles have been accepted to army inventory as "Autoblindo 86 (AB86)". However, a staff officer and an Arnaldo official were arrested on charges of bribery after the explosion. After this incident, mass production was cancelled and the vehicles were removed from inventory in 1990 without participating in any combat. Prototypes later used as frontal crash test vehicles because of excessive weight.

The deadliest weapon of this vehicle was its weight when not equipped with any firearms.

V-shaped monocoque hull of 6615 is made of 8 mm 5803 aluminum armor plates, and it contains two escape doors, one bigger double evacuation door on the back, gun mantlets and NBC protection. Before the serial production phase, it's intended to carry up to 8 fully equipped men. Engine, manual driveline and axles taken from standard 4 ton military truck model of FIVA which is already on service in army. Automatic transmission is made under license from Germany.

Mod contains 4 configurations (choices of manual and automatic transmissions, N/A or turbocharged induction), features air brakes and reverse gear chime. Interior sight won't be adapted cause of always shaky placement on all positions, thanks for you didn't ask anything about it.
