Fighting the oil crisis, Bruckell was struggling in the mid-to late-1970s. The personal luxury car market suffered greatly as a result, with the once powerful engines of the past becoming dull and underperforming. What was it that Bruckell felt the public needed? Yes, a diesel engine with less power than the gas motors! The 350 CUI 'Ellis Eight' V8 motor, namesake taken from Ellis Island, had an almost identical build to the 378 'Luxe Eight' which became the engine's worst flaw. Because of this almost exact build, Bruckell chose to keep the head bolt pattern and design the same so they could use the same tooling for both engines. This ignorant design gave rise to the motor's swift reputation to be incredibly unreliable. Fortunately, the motor was limited to the most opulent premium trim levels. Don't worry if you're purchasing a secondhand Moonhawk; the diesel models didn't sell well, therefore the majority of the time it isn't equipped with it.
