Beta Mount Cotton Hillclimb 0.8

Mount Cotton Hillclimb, QLD, Australia 946m racetrack with Time Trial mode

    Hi Everyone,
I have never made a map before, or done any 3d modeling really, so this is my first attempt at a map. I have always wanted to re create one of the smaller local racetracks here in Australia that don't get any attention or love from any game, also I have friends who race at Mount Cotton so will be handy to practice in the sim. I chose BeamNG specifically because it has pretty easy to use in-game map editor. I'm useless at blender etc.

This map was created using HighDef's map template as a base, the terrain was mapped using http://elevation.fsdf.org.au/ Lidar point cloud, imported into blender, then greyscale height map created in blender and imported into BeamNG. I tried the greyscale height map export in meshmixer but it was low quality and didnt get a great result, so I exported a mesh to blender and followed a tutorial to do a better greyscale height map in blender. the resulting terrain was really good and almost smooth enough to drive on. This made it a lot easier to get accurate banking by laying a mesh road over the terrain and align terrain to mesh, followed by removing mesh road and laying decal road for the tarred surface and more decal roads set to white lines.

I haven't ever been there in person so only had google maps and youtube videos to go on to get the details correct. The main focus was on getting the track elevation and positioning/banking correct for accurate racing. Someone who races a lot at the real Mount Cotton track has tested this map on his simulator and confirmed that this track is really close to how it feels in real life. I don't know how to make 3d models so I could only use what 3d models are built in / found in other maps. Theres a few missing parts - no Sign at the start line, no ripple strips (replaced with thick lines), pit area is basic, trees are placed randomly and not in the correct places (or even the correct type of trees) and the hut at the start line is just a fire watch tower sunk all the way to the ground haha.

I don't really have the skill to get this track any closer to real life than it is right now. I may update it over time as I learn more. I hope some of you have some fun with this trying out the Time Trial mode. I tend to use the Hirochi SBR4 Hillclimb edition and tend to get around the 42 seconds mark. There is a thumbnail in the time trial section from the main menu that explains the correct route, since it can be a bit confusing as you have to backtrack after the second loop. Be careful over the crest of the first loop and over lovers leap or you will lose it and end up in the nuts.

    have fun,
    Jayme304

Really fun short hillclimb course! I got the SBR4 Hillclimb DCT to 38.9, pretty crazy that the real purpose built open-wheelers can get 35s here

Very very good. I can't say much about it in terms of it's disadvantages / downsides!
