Holy moly what a hell of a map! I've never seen my computer use 21GB of swap before. Amazing detail, and the highways are actually perfect for high speed runs. This is the most realistic feeling map yet! I can only imagine how long this took. Even the signage looks legit. I think some spawn points would be nice though since it's so huge.

      Author's Response
Thanks, I tried here. I live not too far from where this map is, so I got the chance to go check things out when I wasn't sure. I put extra effort into the highways and as such I am glad it shows. There's currently seven spawn points (most of them spawn you with a car, other times, just spawn a car yourself), there will be more spawn points in the future. As far as swap-files go, be glad you have the free space or a swap file at all, as some people used-to disable theirs thinking it's bad for this or that reason. Physics models are immensely huge and the data set for this map is about as large as is reasonable for this game, currently (until there's tiled terrains in the future). Glad you had fun, and at-least now you surely won't have any buyer's remorse for your computer hardware. Thanks for writing in!

This looks amazing and the roads are amazing.
I'm running this in 4K resolution with the following pc specs.
    i5 4670
    16gb ram
    GTX980 4gb @1350mhz
    500gb ssd

It runs with around 30fps with some drops and frame spikes in some areas.
The strangest thing is that on this map and other large maps the cars wiggle even when not in motion. I do not know why this happens but I thought I would share as a possible bug with higher boundry maps. Perhaps it's my lack of video memory for the higher resolution. I didn't test any lower resolution but if anything changes I'll edit this.
    1. bob.blunderton
      Author's Response
4k resolution, wow, I don't even run that here. I bet it looks beautiful, with all those 4k x 4k and 4k x 2k textures. There's over 1gb of road textures alone, most everything I made by hand custom for this map (and my other maps). The cars 'wiggle' a bit due to how the physics get in the game engine, when you get a certain amount of MILES from the game's origin point (the very center of the map at 0,0,0 which is somewhere a mile or two south ROCKWOOD). So when you get 8~10 miles from the center of the map, a little wiggle turns into the shimmy-shimmy-shake :) Basically looks like you lost some vacuum lines on the car, when you haven't. So yes, entirely, it's not a bug on the map. Thanks for taking the time to check out the map and sending in performance data / feedback. It's much appreciated, and I can make better maps when I know who/what I am making it for. --Cheers!

just wow man, living near chattanooga and going to windrock offroad park in oliver springs, i have driven through this map many of times! its pretty much dead on real life! excellent job!

and also, right where this map ends at oliver springs, is basically where Windrock offroad park is.. if you ever decide to expand it towards that way, that would be incredible! lots of great scenery up that way, trails, mountains, huge windmills, the old and famous"brushy mountain state prison"!

    keep up the good work!

There will be other Tennessee maps, for sure! I live not very far to this map's location, in Tennessee USA. It's a beautiful state, and would recommend anyone to come see it, if you have even the smallest appreciation for scenic beauty. I will be putting a new version up of this with more progress in due time. If and when tileable terrain is implemented, this will be a truly open-world experience. I already have other terrains pre-made, just waiting on game support, if not they will be individual maps of beautiful curving US route 40. --Cheers!

Thanks. Beamng.drive is such a fun 'just cruising' game, shoe-horned by small in-game maps (that, though nicely detailed, don't do this game justice). The devs had open-world game environment in their mission statement for this game, on the store page in Steam... So I made an open-world for it. Glad you enjoyed it! Don't worry, this isn't my last (or first) map. There will be more, in due time.

It won't be done for a while, but work progresses on it still, though a bit slower than it was before - progress is progress. I am working on aquiring some more building models, and other assets to use in my map to give it more variation (every housing development should NOT look the same!). It may take some time, but it will be worth it in the end. This map was made for just screaming through with a fast car, on a realistic environment. What most would look at as just some boring no-name place was transcribed into the game as a scenic open-world just begging to be both sped through at a high rate of speed on the other-worldly smooth boulevards and highways, and enjoyed at a slower more leisurely pace taking in the scenery. I am glad you enjoyed it. There will be much more to enjoy in the future when it's closer to completion. Thanks for taking the time to write in!

Thanks for the system config post (a place to rave about expensive pc hardware finally!), as it lets me know just who's running this / what they've run it on / vs what I have to make this map on. This map has about, or possibly over 1000 hours of work put into it over 9 months. The map *is* taxing but this was known from the get-go, when I first made this I didn't even think beamng.drive could DO this. However, with some help from the developers working on the game engine (even since the map has been released a few months), performance and lag-spots are considerably less and where they still are, they're less problematic. This map will be updated in the future with some more detail (furnishings, a few missing roads added, game-version fixing if necessary). An open-world style game engine is part of the long-run goal of this game, as-per the developers; but how to test if there's no truly open, open-world. This is about as big as you can make a game-world for it to currently run on 8gb RAM machines. Keep an eye on RAM usage as you run this map and deploy some AI, as it can use 3.5~5gb up pretty much at loading time (can use a few more GB later), especially on maxed graphics. It also easily uses up 3.5gb of video ram (I will keep it under 4gb) with all the custom 2k & 4k textures I made & put in. Thanks for taking the time to write in and list your PC config, as it helps. --Cheers!

Good map, biggest issue is FPS, I have 16GB of system ram and can't run it on maximum graphics, but it's not too far off (I also have two GTX 660's in SLI, so they're not the greatest, but not too bad). The road's are fun to drive on, my biggest issue with them are the railroad crossings in some areas, they feel a bit too... "vicious" I think it the way to say it... they are a bit jagged and like to pop tires some times (same with spawn town curbs near the gas station) and suspension even on offroad vehicles HATES them. The scenery is beautiful and you wouldn't believe how much I nerdgasmed about the working traffic lights (I spent a good 5 minutes just watching them gobsmacked), the sides of the roads are nicely decorated and they're pleasing to drive on if you're just driving to drive (Which I do). So I think i'll give it a 7.5 out of 10 mainly due to unstable FPS and the tire eating curbs in the spawn town, and the railroad crossings both of which can be fixed I presume... I fully recommend you download this map, just make sure you pay attention to the few things I've mentioned here, and keep an eye on it for any updates fixing some of them!

      Author's Response
Thanks for writing in! It's always nice for some kind words accompanied by some very useful constructive criticism.
Tires popped by railroad crossings is mostly due to the model's collision mesh, especially when hitting the brakes, or nose-diving onto the crossing from another nearby jump or deviation in the road. There's not a lot I can do about this unfortunately at the current moment, but this may get better in due time (especially if I start doing all my own models). Try not to brake or turn hard or skid across these if possible.
Curbs popping tires - yes it happens - sometimes even over the access ramps/driveway aprons (technical term, I used to work in construction), similar to the railroad crossing issue just above, try to refrain from hard driving moves while going over them (hard turning the wheel, or sliding/heavy braking). Right now I cannot do a lot about that but may be able to in the future. These are made with meshes so I can put more of them in a map and have maximum versatility with implementing many of these, without going over the 4096 hard-limit of objects per map.
Uneven fps is caused by being an extremely large, purpose built, over-the-top quantity of map and the objects within in. While I am working on more ways to improve this (occluding rendering behind large view-blocking objects, for example), and as the game progresses, FPS should stay the same or get a little bit better - hopefully not WORSE.
This map was originally just a private large-map / open-world / game-engine-resource-streaming 'proof of concept' project, never meant to be released. As I added more detail, and furnished up some semi-complete map scenes, people started liking what they saw. Eventually, I felt after most of the greater part of the year working on it, it was fit to release. Aside of a touch of lag while streaming world-data in as you drive, or when you first look a certain way after the map loads, it should be pretty fluid aside of the RAM requirement of 8gb being tough for some PC's. Glad to hear you did have some fun with this, and the future of this map - more buildings, jumps, more roads, and some missions, should bring much more fun to everyone.
      Thank-you for your review! --Cheers

Mod's good, but my pc can't run it and it can handle a T-series loaded with tasticola and an SBR4 just fine.
    1. bob.blunderton
      Author's Response
Do you meet the system ram requirements of 8gb of system RAM?
T-series depends on a strong processor and a half-decent video card (or just appropriate settings). Generally, most people that would have trouble running this are ram-limited. If you only have 4gb of system ram, or possibly 6gb (at this point some folks can run this), then you are likely sure as to what the issue is. If your serious about enjoying 3d gaming at any rate, even if it's just this game, or a modern city simulator, or anything of the like, you should make sure your system has atleast 8~12gb of ram for smooth, reliable frame rates. Ram is cheap, it's not in everyone's budget for sure, but when it is, it is one of the best ways to perk up the PC.
When you have the time and the information handy, tab over to the discussion thread and post your PC's part list (specs) so I can add it to the can run it / can't run it list I've got going (RAM amount, vga, cpu etc).
That being said, this was an 'over-the-top' mod from the get-go. Do enjoy So-Cal Interstate (for folks that cannot run this!) in the mean-time, it's much simpler but still with almost as much fun roads, and almost as much effort put into them.
--Thanks for still writing in. Constructive criticism is always appreciated and will be considered when updating existing, or making new maps.

Thanks! Sometimes bigger IS better :) This map is made for fast cars but also provides quite a number of winding roads with tight corners for plenty of variety. 1000 hours of work have gone into this map thus far (950+ in the uploaded version), and work does continue. I will most likely post another update after I catch my other two maps up in the next few weeks so they work more natively with the most recent game version. *note* This map still functions fine in 0.8 for anyone else reading this. Thanks for taking the time to review & rate this map --Cheers!

You can see that a lot of work has been put into this map but the performance is rubbish on my computer...
    1. bob.blunderton
      Author's Response
Turn Reflection resolution all the way down, or turn off the mirror reflections. See if this helps. Also, shadows are a performance hit. This is a full game world in a pre-release game that doesn't quite have all it's open-world features completed yet- so performance can be hit or miss on systems near the minimum requirements for the game. Please post your full system's specifications to the discussion forum as we value your opinion on the map.
Please keep in mind 3400~3600mb (about 3.5gb) of VIDEO memory is required for high texture detail. If your video card has only 2~3gb, use medium or so, that will help substantially. Performance should get better (even if only slightly) in future versions of this map and/or game - not worse. Thanks for taking the time to review --Cheers

Wouaaah! A very very ambitious work! xD And what a huge work to do that! But you exceed the capacities of torque engine, the terrain mesh is really too big and you can't have to the terrain a precise work to do a good atmosphere, sorry...:( If we can have tiles terrains with the torque to do very huge size of map it will be really better! Also it's a really good map thanks! :)
    1. bob.blunderton
      Author's Response
This was originally a Proof-of-Concept style 'large map test', it was only a test. This was supposed to be deliberately-over-the-top, more a means to stress-test the game engine, to see just what this simulator could do before it gave up the ghost, than to be a real purpose-built-map. A bunch of folks egged me on to release it as I was building this in the spring. If they do release tiled terrains (that would be awesome), this map will be re-worked as needed. As more and more streaming optimizations are put in, it will run better, too. This runs beautiful on my end, sans a few under-optimized spots here and there that go down to 30~40fps (vs 100~140+ fps). What it lacks in a pothole simulator, it plenty makes up for in sheer size. The odd part is I actually have more issues running So-Cal Interstate (my last map before this), than I do this one and that one has no trees/signs/rocks etc! This map will use 3~3.6gb of vRAM (Video memory, on the video card) and around 6~7 gb of system RAM shortly after load, additional GB's of page file use may be present though. I tried to keep ram use civil despite map size.
In the future, our PC's will run this even better, and more people will meet the system requirements. Considering the game isn't officially 'finished' yet, I will not worry on it for now, about performance issues.
To end on the most positive note, I really appreciate the critique especially from another mapper (you make awesome pro & FUN maps - keep it up!), so feel free to chime into the discussions if you have more input. To everyone else, I encourage you to try out his maps!

Good video card, enough memory to run the map, maybe your pc isn't so SPUD-worthy as once thought - always a good thing! A lot of effort has gone into streamlining assets and making sure I can re-use them plenty of times otherwise this would be a 10gb download and impossible to run. You also most-likely DO already have proper video-quality settings on your computer, so that the poor thing doesn't go up in smoke either tee-hee. Well anyways, always nice to hear something good for a change, right? Look for updates in the future.

Yeah I had to drive to Knoxville (past the edge of this map's east side by 20 minutes), from an area technically WEST of this map's location. So I had to go drive through this map technically to get my Rx 480 8gb video board. Was like... gosh this is familiar... hey wait a minute, I am driving in my @#$%ing map... heh. Was a very strange feeling! Had to do it again a few weeks later when a fan went south while it was under carry-in warranty yet. Ugh. Got to get some pointers while I was passing through though. Always fun when you can drive someplace you've been inside a video game. The street layout is 98% accurate most times, and the map is about like a 9.4:10 scale - so that it fits comfortably in the 8gb system ram footprint. Glad to hear from another local - we have a few!

      Author's Response
Thanks. I totally understand your sentiment about big maps being just bland miles of nothing. While that's great for blasting through in a fast car - or maybe flying over top of, it would get boring fast. I couldn't afford object-wise to make it super-dense population nor did the real-terrain-recreation call for any dense population other than a few small towns in rural America. I will be filling in more detail as time goes by. Look for a new version after the next game-version-update, I am hoping to include missions in the next version (no promises, but they'll be in eventually). Join in on the discussion page if you'd like to see a certain race, or something special added in (that goes for anyone else reading this, too). Work is slow but steady so no worries! --Cheers.
