The Rigel company landed in North America and Mexico in 1994, it was able to place a 5-meter SUV on the market to make itself known and capture the attention of future customers. Years later, in 1996, it is ready to put all his effort into a new best seller. With this strategy, it places a 4-meter compact in five and three-door versions called RIGEL PRISMA. After a couple of years, American, Canadian and Mexican citizens know or have heard of Rigel, now they have seen its models, its quality and its price, those who trust the European brand will be able to do it again with a compact that comes to compete with other big brands such as the Japanese ones.
The Rigel Prisma is more than a compact for the European brand, a new stage in design opens, creating a new path that the following models to come will follow. The new design team is committed to rounded lines and aerodynamic coefficients, eliminating or leaving behind the more straight angles and components such as optics with simple and square shapes.
Main and new features of the Prisma
- Creation of a new platform to create a more rigid chassis and a more deformable body, all to provide the vehicle with greater safety in the event of an accident.
- Design based on the fluidity of movement and curves, creating a new resistance to wind and improving the aerodynamic coefficient for fuel savings.
- The option to mount power steering with electrical system, Rigel abandons the power steering with hydraulic rack and pinion. The new rack propelled by an electric motor eliminates large components, lowers costs and allows very precise driving, improving driving.
- Active and passive safety elements present in all model finishes, we have new crumple zones, side bars on doors, ABS on all models and redesign of the dashboard with the placement of soundproof rubber in all finishes.
New Engines.
- The motorization of the new Rigel Prisma has been designed exclusively for the American market, using a compact four-cylinder block and made up of different elements that enjoy a simplicity to improve its reliability. These blocks will vary depending on the trims between 1,300 cm³ and 1,600 cm³ with power ranging between 70 and 110 horsepower and all of them orchestrated by automatic gearboxes. For the American markets, the incorporation of any diesel engine is not foreseen.
Trims: As usual in Rigel, the range will be structured according to the budget and the needs of the customers, being able to choose very simple versions and high-end versions with a sporty character.
GL: The entry-level model has all the essentials for everyday life, creating a perfect vehicle for the majority of ordinary citizens. It mounts a 1300cc 70-horsepower gasoline engine with a five-speed automatic gearbox. This configuration is designed for maximum savings in the pocket, eliminating, for example, metallic paints, paints on the bumpers, trims or wheels and some interior elements, making it simpler, more basic and cheaper. For Rigel, being economical does not mean unsafe, which is why this model has ABS brakes, double front airbags and new deformable systems.

GLX: the GLX version is for those who need a little more, the difference is created by the “X” for a higher price you can take a Prisma with a 1500 cm³ engine and 80 horsepower. Exterior in metallic colors, painted bumpers and its interior fully upholstered with quality plastics and new noise-insulating rubber. The security elements are the same as in the GL model.

GLS: Top of the range, it is designed for ride comfort and sporty driving. This engine is a 1600 cm³ block that together with its turbo generates 110 horsepower. The interior is exclusive to this sporty version, combining leather and fabric elements creating a special atmosphere. The suspensions have been adjusted to make them firmer and obtain high performance when cornering, it is also a few centimeters closer to the ground.
