Straight Line Challenge 1.3.1

Cross the map within a narrow, straight corridor

  1. RcCookie
A collection of missions where you have to drive from one side of a map to the other, while staying within a fixed corridor. This concept is heavily inspired by the (unfortunately outdated) Juggernaut scenarios and a few of the missions are based on the original scenarios. However, this mod uses the new rock crawling bounds system, so the walls aren't solid, instead you get disqualified for driving outside the corridor.

All scenarios can be played with a provided or a custom vehicle (a custom vehicle may be necessary to beat all stars in some cases). You can take the missions as both a puzzle to find a (good) route, and as a time trial to drive your route as fast as possible.

There is currently a total of 14 scenarios, 12 of which on official maps and 2 on Motorsports Playground (these will only show up if you have that mod installed). You may need to restart your game after installing the mod for it to show up in the scenarios list.

    Thanks for playing!

    FAQ

Q: Is this your first mod?
A: Yes, indeed. Me nice to me :)

Q: Can I just drive around the obstacles as long as I am back in the corridor within 5 seconds?
A: Yes, technically you can, though I have tried to design the routes in such a way that that isn't really feasable for major obstacles. In some places I have also places some invisible barriers. If you find a major skip, feel free to let me know!

Q: Can't you just decrease the 5 second timeout?
A: No, not without quite a bit of work. The "crawl" mission type does not support adjusting the timeout, so I had to somehow modify it first.

Q: Why do the bounds on the Spearleaf Island mission look different?
A: All scenarios use the built-in bounds system to specify the allowed corridor. These bounds snap to the terrain (even if you tell them otherwise). That's also why the border may look weird in some places where you don't drive on the terrain directly, but on a prop. Spearleaf Island seems to be a separate terrain block, or something else all together, but certainly the bounds don't snap to it. Thus I placed some simple walls to mark the corridor (I can't be bothered to place a million small pieces following the terrain). The regular bounds still exists, but are far below the ground.

Q: Will there be more missions in the future?
A: Maybe, if you have a good map or route feel free to leave a comment (also modded maps). Not all maps work for this kind of mission (think of ETK Driving Experience etc.). Just getting the West Coast scenarios working was quite difficult. I cannot remove existing items from the map for the scenario (say a barrier) (at least I don't know how, except maybe with Lua, which I don't want to touch on for now). Adding too many helping props also ruins the spirit, and I'm not a 3d artist, I will just take some random asset I happen to find in the asset browser.

    Q: What does Juggernaut mean?
    A:
I have no idea. That's why I didn't call my scenario like that. Googling I just found some comic character, but I don't quite understand how this correlates to going in a straight line...

Awesome concept. I do feel that some levels straight-up block off access, like too many trees to crawl through or, like in West Coast, I keep looping around. I like the challenge and I am trying to complete them all.

Nice throwback to my old scenarios, very fun to play some more challenges on new terrain with the modern BeamNG scenario possibilities!

I think this is a clever challenge and a great mod. The only problem I have is the D-series in the first Small Island challenge seems to spawn with a damaged rear-right tire

First of all, I'm happy you are enjoying it! The problem with the tire is weird, it works fine for me. Maybe you flattened the tire in a previous run, sometimes tires look broken even after restarting? I'll move the spawn location a little bit though, maybe that will fix it for you.

I haven't even played it yet and it's already one of my favorite missions. It's so out-of-the-box, but it's right in the spirit of Beam's absurdity. Nice work!
