Experimental Toy Building Block Car 1.0

Full size car made of toy building blocks of a famous brand. Great customization and destruction!

    TOY BUILDING BLOCK CAR
    repo01.png

(Map used for the images: "Honey, I shrunk the car 2" by Spencer Johnson)

Don't let this image deceive you, this car is as big as a normal vehicle, but it still looks and behaves like you would expect from this kind of toy! That includes a unique damage model, which I tried to get as close as possible to the real thing while keeping performance in mind to make it not much more complex than normal vehicles.
    repo02.png

It is quite obviously a toy car made of famous building block manufactured by a company which I can't mention here due to copyright. I'm sure you have heard of it, and most likely owned these blocks yourself as a kid, maybe you still do. This specific design is a recreation of a custom build I have made in real life many years ago, it has undergone many improvements. (The minifigure driver on the image has been removed from the mod due to trademark issues, but you can put a crash test dummy in the car instead.)

This mod is a result of over 2 years worth of work in total, the majority by me, but also by some other people credited at the end. While it was very time-consuming and at times frustrating to make, it was also a lot of fun, especially during the testing! I hope you will have as much fun using it as I had making it, or more! If you wish to create another mod of this kind, you are free to use my assets provided on the discussion page!
    repo03.png

This mod has a lot of unique features that are hard to find on other cars, the most notable ones being:
    • Unique damage physics: unlike a normal car, this one doesn't deform, instead it can separate into individual pieces! Almost every single one can fall off separately, the only exceptions are the ones that are hard to separate in real life - I kept them joined together for optimization purposes.
      repo04.png
    • Variety of selectable variants : Being so far the only one of its kind, the car offers over 100 different configurations to choose, so you are not limited in the selection of the type of car you want. They cover a lot of vehicle niches, and are mostly built to loosely resemble cars from the late 70s to 90s, with some newer exceptions. Many configurations are inspired by famous cars from real life, movies, games and other BeamNG mods!
      repo05.png
    • Great customization: Following the idea of the real life building blocks allowing the user to create whatever they want, the parts selector of this mod allows a great deal of customization with many parts and slots to play with! Not even limited to visible parts, you can also choose the powertrain layout! Additionally, the Tuning menu allows you to customize things that are not possible for a normal car, such as brake torque, engine properties, air drag, weight of the car per piece, connection strength of pieces, radiator effectiveness, gauge ranges, tire grip, all gear ratios, and even more for some variants!
      repo06.png
    • Animated crash test dummy driver option! See it for yourself!

Some smaller, but still notable features:
    • Lack of suspension: It's not a bug but a feature, accurate to the real life equivalent! The ride is very bouncy due to that, for those who don't like it there are some variants with actual suspension as well, mostly lifted and off-road ones.
    • For those who like police chases: 16 different police car versions included among the configurations, from 4 different countries, the US ones having variants from mid 70s to early 2000s, including undercover police, retired police, state patrol, highway patrol, FBI and interceptor, each police car has a unique light bar and livery!
    • Each police light bar has 3 flash pattern variants (aside from the standard modes), you switch between them in parts selector by changing the Police Lights Controller. There are some cool unused patterns so play with the different variants and find something you like!
    • The roof number on police variants is randomly generated for variety. You can also change it to a variant where you set the number in Tuning menu.
    • The FBI variant has working guns! Including lasers with 2 color options to help you aim!
    • Modular paint design system, paint every panel separately!
    • Adjustable soundscape, lets you change various sounds!
    • Customizable modular race wing! 3 height and 2 width options for the base, body colored or support style, 3 width variants, 5 variants of side pieces, option for a double and triple wing, or adjustable angle!
    • Implemented mileage simulation from my other mods. Additionally you can set the damage of the starter, head gasket, piston rings, rod bearings, spark plugs and injector.
    • The speedometer has no markings on it by default, and the value on the scale treated as the top speed is customizable, can be in metric or imperial units. Peak RPM on the tachometer always matches the engine. But marked non-customizable versions are also available in both metric and imperial.
    • Pieces of the engine bay can fall off, which will damage the engine to an extent. The carburetor on the V8 engine can fall off which will really damage it. Intakes can fall off which will break them.
    • Exhaust system is basically choosing where the tips are, and they are connected to the engine with invisible pipes. So you can have as weird of an exhaust outlet configuration as you want, derby stacks, front and rear fender exhaust, and side, center or twin upper exhaust on the back, 13 outlets in total.
    • Rear wheel steering is available, both as Pessima-like AWS and crawler-like mirrored front steering. This was just natural to add since the front and rear axles are exactly the same. Option for ATV style braked differential steering also available!
    • Animated plastic fire appears on the fuel tank when it gets ruptured. You can add fake afterfire to the exhaust, and fake nitrous fire of various colors.
    • Everything in the interior is physically simulated and animated. When an interior piece falls off it stops being animated and becomes loose. The doors can open by key bindings too as long as they are attached.
    • The car has kind of a crumple zone, but instead of crumpling it breaks into pieces, keeping the driver somewhat safe. I made it by happy accident, similar thing happens on the irl one, except the minifigure is worn and weak so it doesn't survive lol.
    • There are custom engine sounds recorded from the real life version of the car. It sounds silly, but not in a bad way, I hope.
    • Various parts have variants of different colors selectable. Most often it's the 3 color palettes, light and dark grey, and black. It's not that revolutionary but it's cool and good for customization.
    • There is a small trailer also included with the mod, both in the car's parts selector and as a separate vehicle. Offers decent customization.
    • The custom wheels can be used on center lug wheel hubs, so they fit both Civettas, the new Pessima and some mods. If you use my mod for wheel hub swaps, they will work on any car. Offroad wheels fit 6-lug hubs instead. You can also use the normal wheels on this car by switching to 5-lug wheel hubs.
    • JATO and ram plow included, every mod needs these lol.
    • Lots of other features that are too small for me to list, you will find them yourself hopefully.
    repo08.png

A less optimistic part of the description - known issues:
    • Force feedback is jank. I never found a way to implement it properly on this setup. I reduced the strength by A LOT because it was way too strong on crashes, but now it's very weak on driving but hard crashes will still yank the wheel hard, so be careful with it!
    • It's not as stiff as it would be in real life, but believe me, its at the very limit of how stiff a car with so many interconnected parts can get in this game.
    • Due to lack of suspension, driving is very bouncy. But maybe it's a feature and not a bug?
    • For optimization purposes, flat pieces have collision with no height, so they act like way flatter than they are. Changing it would make the car a lot more laggy so I'm not doing that.
    • Aerodynamics (and reaction to water) are weird, the game doesn't like many flat surfaces in a row like this has, so I had to reduce the default aero scale.
    • Some configurations are not finetuned quite well. Honestly I gave up on them for now, will fix them in a future update.
    • Some textures are not the best because I'm not the greatest at textures. Don't look at them too closely.
    • If you spawn the configs with the trailers and use them as AI, they will sometimes refuse to drive, but sometimes will work completely fine, no idea what is going on there. They used to never drive at all and burn the clutch all the time, I fixed it but it still sometimes happens and sometimes not .__.
    • Despite all the variety and customization, the only body styles available are based on a 2 door coupe platform. I'm releasing it in this state because adding the other body styles I want will take a really long time so I will do it in a future update.

    Credits:
    • Me - everything except for the stuff below, duh.
    • @CrashHard - A lot of help with the suspension, improving its Jbeam, fixing bugs and finetuning the configs that use it, and making a few videos of a beta version of the mod, thanks to which I improved upon the issues I saw in them.
    • @Xupaun - Improving and finetuning many configurations, beta testing, some improvements to the wheel hubs and adding drift steering to the suspension.
    • @Inn0centJok3r - Allowing me to use some of the code from the old version of Gavril Vertex for the randomized police roof number, because I'm too bad at this stuff to figure out what I was doing wrong myself lol.
    • @CrashBoomPunk - Showcase, beta testing and feedback. (I'm not sure if it's his real profile on the forum but the details match up and it would make sense, sorry if it's an impostor lol)
    • @Camodogaming24 - Showcasing an old demo version of the mod, and thanks to his video I managed to fix a lot of issues with that version.
    • Felipe Maciel - Beta testing and a few ideas. (He wanted some cool light bars, so I went all out on those lol)
    • My friends from a private Discord server - some suggestions and being very cool people.
    • BeamNG - a few vanilla assets I reused, some with modifications, especially the textures from the common folder, reusing them allowed me to keep quite low file size.
If you have read so far, watch this cool crash at 1000 km/h! Lol

Have fun and look forward to an update with more content some time in the future!
If you want to make your own mod based on this, look in the discussion tab for the assets I used to create it! You can do whatever you want with them as long as you credit me! You can also use the mod, a modified version of it, or any of the assets, for commercial purposes, it's free for everyone.

This is a MUST download for the tires alone. Use Meo's tires converter to put them on any car or truck. You can tune the wheels to be awesome off-road or for drifting. Wish I could tune the vanilla wheels this much.

Fun little experiment. Brick Rigs much? lol I've heard good things about that game but I haven't bought/tried it yet. I saw video of it and immediately thought they were borrowing a lot of physics from BeamNG.drive.

Good but Force Feedback kinda bad

It is bad because there is effectively no suspension. It's also weak because otherwise it would jerk the wheel very hard on big crashes.

Are there going to be any updates in the (near) future?

    If so, when?

    (No rush, I'm just curious)

One was in the work, but I need to finish the new suspension for that update, which I put on hold for now because it was frustrating. Maybe I can get it done in a few months or later, we will see.
