***CONTAINS SPOILERS***
As a replacement to my previous review, I have finally completed the map after approximately five and a half hours of driving. Following this, I can give a full review on the map.
Level 1:
A nice, reasonably easy introduction to the map. No major tripping points, and the Hopper is capable of completing the section with ease (even in 2WD mode, which I challenged myself with). Overall, it served its purpose as a gentle beginning very well.
Level 2:
I was expecting this level to be easier than it was, with the Piccolina being fully off-road prepped. However, being rear-wheel drive and quite inherently unstable, I found it to be running away from itself quite regularly. However, this did mean that decisions had to be made quickly before the car would throw itself down to the ground. The rings at the start were particularly challenging, and this was the first point where I realised how difficult completing this map was going to be.
Level 3:
While it looked daunting, this is certainly a level where you feel accomplished after each obstacle. I was left with a slightly sour taste following the right front tyre consistently becoming trapped in one of the joins between blocks in the second obstacle, but soon forgot about that as I continued throughout the section. While far from the hardest section, it was just in the sweet spot where fun can be found from satisfaction.
Level 4:
This was, by far and away, my favourite level from an enjoyment point of view. I already enjoy driving the Bolide, and in its 390GT trim, it was sublime. While it was the first truly unsuited vehicle to challenging terrain, the more speed-oriented obstacles made it feel at home. The rush of mastering the slides was impeccable, and left me wanting more of the same. While it was an unforgiving car with a manual gearbox and no assists, that did not stop it feeling smooth, refined and fun.
Level 5:
I laughed out loud when I saw what the vehicle for this level would be. However, the van of an open differential and a driveshaft made of fine cheese certainly presented a challenge. Not only was it difficult to keep upright due to its inherent instability, it also enjoyed getting stuck... everywhere. I particularly liked the three wall-rides, which I found to be a good challenge and extremely satisfying to get right, but I also enjoyed the rest of these obstacles, not least due to the ridiculousness of conquering them with a van.
Level 6:
This was very much a fun, light-hearted level in my opinion. The SBR4 was eager, and keeping it in check was difficult, but on the obstacles where it was allowed to stretch its legs, it was a joy. I found the pipe section to be particularly chaotic, which is always fun, but the overall difficulty was not letting the extreme power of the car get to one's head.
Level 7:
One would think that a sequential transmission rally car would be easy to drive over obstacles. However, once I came to the realisation that it was so easy to stall, I was shown how wrong I had been. The number of times I had to restart the engine was most likely into the hundreds by the end of the section. Nonetheless, its ease of stalling was an important factor, as it made sure you needed to carry momentum through the obstacles, and commit rather than stopping and waiting. The only issues not particularly relating to skill came from the Sunburst's liking for eating its own bumper, but that only happened a few times. I found this to be the most difficult section, but this was primarily to do with how sore my feet were getting from trying not to stall every three seconds.
Level 8:
Would it really be an obstacle course in BeamNG without a poorly placed Pigeon? Of course not. A hilarious but angering experience, the difficulty seemed to arise more from keeping all three wheels on the ground than actually completing the obstacles. However, the track was made beautifully to exploit the weaknesses of such an unstable car, particularly. the aggressive adverse camber sections. It seemed almost impossible to complete multiple sections to begin with, particularly the huge ramp, but I enjoyed the challenge of fitting it through the tiny openings when the car was already off balance. The lesson of patience and care was truly key here.
Level 9:
The Scintilla is certainly a supercar, and in the GTs Corse Spyder trim, it is verging on a race car. Getting it to go into the tubes reliably without puncturing the radiator or bending the wheels was incredibly challenging and frustrating, but the speed it could easily attain was a beautiful relief from level 8. I had some difficulty with the ESC kicking in at random points when on the slides, which would unavoidably throw me off, but that was not enough to sour the adrenaline rush. Learning how to consistently remain on the correct inner line in the pipes was my favourite part of this section, as it was extremely rewarding.
Level X:
Far from the most difficult obstacles in my opinion, but more of an endurance challenge. The Grand Marshal is tough, and it needs to be - it certainly takes a beating, and can lose a driveshaft or become beached quite easily. The shining jewel of this, for me, has to be the execution of the final obstacle; one particularly long string of varying terrain which tests almost everything learned throughout the map. The final tightrope is particularly stressful, as something that should be easy suddenly becomes very difficult. And then, you reach the trophy; a fitting touch.
I felt genuinely rewarded finishing this map. It was infuriating and beautiful, frustrating and elating, shocking and stunning at the same time. I would recommend it to anyone who relishes a challenge but found the Carkour (or similar) maps just a little too short and easy. Very well put together, and thoroughly impressive work. Thank you for reading. -
