In the later parts of the 80s GTO IMSA era, Audi dominated a few races with AWD, and with that Wendover decided to also compete with this setup.
The biggest problem was its overwhelming weight. So the front end was converted to a single fibreglass front clip, the chassis was acid dipped (against the rules, but hard to police), a special "heavy-duty" aluminium engine block was made for the v8 sitting further back in the engine bay, and all the racing accoutrement parts. The whole body was also widened by nearly 5 inches to fit the maximum width rules.
