Wulff 400 1.0

A pre-war sports luxury coupe.

  1. Secrane
The Wulff 400 is a sports luxury coupe designed and built by automaker Wulff in the years leading up to, and in the beginning, of World War II. Concepted in 1932, the 400 began production in 1935, before being cancelled in 1942 due to the war.

    History
Wulff had previously been involved in the sports luxury market, notably with the 765. In the early 1930s, it was decided that the 765 needed a successor, as its rapidly aging platform and styling caused sharp declines in sales through the late 1920s, this further being compounded by the financial crisis in 1929.

With ideas being drawn up as early as 1932, it took until 1934 for the project to be fully greenlit, with the first unit rolling off the production line in early 1935. High demand led to a convertible model being made available later in the same year. Production totalled 610 units by the end of production in 1942.

    Specifications
Building on Wulff's knowledge learned from the earlier 765, the 400 offered a large, four-liter inline-6 engine producing 165 horsepower. It made use of an all-aluminium body sat upon a steel ladder frame, with a rear-wheel drive layout. Its top speed was reportedly in the vicinity of 200 km/h (124 mph).

    Significance
Noted for its snappy handling and powerful engine, it became a popular car amongst the upper echelon of both European and international society in the 1930s. However, as the 1930s dragged on and Germany's outward relations soured, Wulff struggled to sell the 400 outside the country. With the outbreak of war in 1939, production ground to a near-halt, with cars being built on an order-only basis. By 1942, the war caused production to be halted entirely in favor of wartime production. In the end, 610 units of the Wulff 400 were produced in total.

It also raced in the Mille Miglia '38, using a special aerodynamic coupé body.

    ----------------------------

I've always had a huge interest in pre-war cars, especially the in the 30s when aerodynamics started gaining a foothold. They are some of my favorite cars, and I really loved making the Wulff 400. I hope you will enjoy it!
