I'm very new to beamNG and have no idea how accessible the physics engine is for mods.
I would love to play around with active suspension stuff (like early -90s F1 cars), and beamNG seems like the the perfect sim for that.
But don't know if this is something that's even remotely possible to do as a mod or not?

Definitely possible. Look at the ETK 800 car in the game, it has an adaptive suspension. I'm sure some Lua god can come up with F1-style active suspension.

If you just want to drive them and not mod yourself, Automobilista 2 just added the MP4/7 and 8 with proper simulation. It's still on Steam sale for six hours from now

Awesome! I'll probably start with trying to figure out how the adaptive suspension stuff works on the ETK 800. And see if that can be pushed further without breaking the physics sim :)
