So this thing was released a while ago, and im curious about what the BeamNG community thinks about it. Lumberyard is a AAA Game engine made by Amazon, and its free and open source. What do you guys think of this? Heres their website: https://aws.amazon.com/lumberyard/ I would also like to say that im not promoting this product in any way. I was also curious about a thing, what if BeamNG was ported to lumberyard? Now keep in mind that this is just a question out of pure curiosity, im not asking for the devs to port it to lumberard. and i know that we wont be able to know what it would be like without it being ported to lumberyard either, i just want your opinion or just comments on this. It also supports consoles and mobile devices. vr is still in development tho. From what ive seen, Lumberyard looks freaking amazing, what are your though on it?
http://www.beamng.com/threads/can-beamng-be-ported-to-ue4.20496/page-3#post-311971 This should be relevant. Lumberyard is basically CryEngine rebranded.
I was not asking for beamng to be ported, and to be honest, i dont want it ported, it would just delay stuff.
I'm much more interested in this. I want to start making maps and I want my roads to be smooth and easy to make. It shouldn't have to be a pain in the ass like modeling has to be. I want to draw perfect roads.
Cryengine can be used to creat the roads. It has a nice feature where you can 'level' the heightmap to follow the road you set. Useful to create smooth roads. Hopefully Lumberyard still has that feature.
It does still have it and works like a dream. However I'm having some trouble importing my map into BeamNG since each editor seems to work with different formats. I'm playing around with the files to see if I can get it to work. --- Post updated --- Oh my god it works! Excellent tool for making silky smooth roads if you don't know how to use blender like me.
I need a weekend project. Can you direct me to the tools I need to get started? I want to make some killer back country stuff.
Well, I just made it work so the workflow isn't going to be perfect, but this is what I did (completely new map from a real place) 1) Got a 8km*8km real life heightmap from terrain.party 2) In Photoshop, resized it to 8000*8000 pixels (so that 1m=1px) and then cropped a 4096*4096 piece (max size you can import in BeamNG at 1m/px I think). 3) Imported the heightmap into Lumberyard (I don't remember if I changed the file format for this, maybe I did, use the application I talk about later if nothing works). 4) Laid out the roads with the road editor (In the Rollup Bar on the right, choose the Objects tab and Miscellaneous objects, then Road). You can move every node of the road around. When you're happy with the road click "Align height map". This will make the terrain follow your road perfectly. You will probably need to readjust the terrain after this, the terrain editor works more or less like the BeamNG one. If you don't like it you can use the BeamNG one, just being careful and not touching the roads obviously. 5) When I was happy with the whole terrain, I exported it as a .PGM file. BeamNG can't read this file yet, so we will convert it to PNG. Download Imagemagick and open the PGM file, then save it as PNG. 6) Open BeamNG and the editor, and import the PNG. For some reason heightmaps only work if they are located in the Steam\steamapps\common\BeamNG\content\levels folder. 7) Tada! That was a pretty crappy tutorial, so if something doesn't work message me and I'll help you.
