I noticed that some mods are created as a collaborative effort. Wouldn't it seem like a useful thing to have something on the forum to help with that-- like a Github thing or something, so a select few (or everyone) could work on a project in a more open sourcing way?

you can just ask someone and they could invite you to a conversation and then you could work on it together. Also try to join some discord servers they have modding groups too.

I guessing this might have not been as useful as I then.

I don't think file sharing is much of an issue, but can see the advantages of working from a common set of files. I've found that organising ideas can be equally valuable. Having a whiteboard that mod team members can all access might be helpful. I used a OneNote online document setup as a checklist, for my last project to keep track of tasks and bugs.
