I shut the server down to replace a fan, then when i booted i turned on Q-Fan but that didnt do anything, i left it anyway and now when Windows 2000 starts up and you do CTRL+ALT+DELETE to login the server goes to standby mode
even says Windows is entering standby Yeah the PSU is a bit sketchy but all seems to be running fine, except the CPU temp is high (its a P4 with dirty fan -80c-) I even pirated a copy of windows 2000 server and ran all the repair options (an ancient version of sfc /scannow) and everything turned up fine Some people reported of UPS software, but i disconnected the UPS and nothing
I recommend testing the PSU itself using a multimeter. http://www.techrepublic.com/article/power-supply-troubleshooting-with-a-multimeter/1056686/
the powersupply is on its way out but its not the cause of the issue, its Windows 2000, it even goes "Windows is preparing for standby". it does bounce about a bit but it might be a sensor issue, like the CPU cant be that hot all the time. I took the hard drive out and put it in a nearby unused machine but didn't recognise mouse/keyboard after startup (so couldn't test CTRL+ALT+DELETE) (probably drivers -it was a completely different machine, a Pentuim D) I know that the windows installation is knackered, but is there anyway to rescue it? I found someone who had the same issue in Windows XP but they reinstalled windows and then it fixed, but because there are loads of files on the server (and not really enough time to reinstall windows -me being a homework laiden teenager) it is best if the installation is rescued.. Also the server kind of boots fine, like the files are accessible, so presumably most of the windows services do start up
