Feb 12 - On Hold Assets Pay Walled. Give me a couple days and I'll update with new link. Been working on this map for a while now, so I figure I should make a post for suggestions, feedback, and to show current progress. This map is Appalachia USA, an area located in the Appalachian mountains featuring the city of Beamsburgh and its surrounding countryside along with a section of the i69 interstate and more. I'm aiming to make this a very detailed map using mostly vanilla assets, on the level of West Coast USA or other dev maps. I started with the Tillamook map from the Gen1 Werkz Patreon as my template. So credit to them for that. I then got my heightmap, moved assets from other maps, and started from basically nothing. Here's what I've done so far..... City of Beamsburgh Map so far from the air 69 Truck Stop i69 Northbound D.O.T. Weigh Station Some trail teasers...... Unnamed waterfall leading to a long, also unnamed creek Alot more to come, so expect a release later on in development. I may release sooner than later with enough interest or if I get some help. Any suggestions and/or criticisms are appreciated and noted. Thanks. Credit for all assets used will be added in when finished. Things could be changed by then, so I'll wait for now. Edit 1 I do plan on adding rural housing, a saw mill, some wildlife, may be a dam along the river/creek, will be adding lighting for alot of the buildings and some street poles, will have A.I. roads, will have a good player home and shop eventually, plan on adding custom signs later on also. Edit 2 Refer to latest posts to see progress and get download links. Please share any issues you find. Edit 3 I will start uploading links here instead of later posts
Planning on adding custom street signs, mile marker signs, and more. Will be RP missions too. Trips to the store and back, repo missions, ect.... If you or anyone else has an idea for anything else I can add, just comment and I'll see what I can do. Likely going to need some help with everything later on, so if any great map makers see this, dm me.
Nice ! (also can we have proper speed limits and speed limit that make sense?) PS : when will this get realesed ? Any early access ?
"Will be developer quality" I am not sure if you understand what it takes to reach this quality... It took the entire team of devs like 5 years to make Johnson Valley, if you want to reach the same quality alone you would have to work for 20+ years...
By that logic, when this mod gets released, beamng will already be in a released state, and this mod would be instantly outdated.
not necessarily, there are excellent maps with dev. quality, for example altitude and many others, if this one will ever be, who knows
Not sure on a release yet, but it will definitely be FREE and have an early release to certain members for testing. I do understand what makes a map Dev quality. They were working on the whole game, so they had limited time to really improve the maps. The dev maps are great and run great, but they use alot of blocker vegetation, the maps are small, and they simply do things differently than I would. So yes, this map will be similar in quality to a dev map. Wont be perfect by any means, but will definitely be good. UPDATE : So, now I'm working more on the creek system and need an idea of the community preference with how the creek should look. Below are the choices.... This is a screenshot from an area of the creek in the East Coast USA map This is an area of the Jungle Rock Island creek This is option 1 from my map, take note of the detail and size of these rocks in comparison to other options This is option 2. No rocks, only the terrain paint texture. Option 3 is my favorite, but the rocks being so big takes away from the detail. Looks great from farther away, but as you get closer, the quality is worse. Which do you guys prefer? There will be flowing water, this is very early so I'm still using an ocean plane for now.
Altitude, Cliff Roads and some of Car Killer's maps are the only ones I can think of, Spencer Johnson's maps and some of the most downloaded repo mods are amazing but they suffer from console error spam and complete lack of optimization, Los Injurus can't judge yet as it's not finished but it's close. In the past before PBR it used to be easier to reach that quality, but not anymore. That's not really the case, there's a separate dedicated team to make maps, and they likely outsource some assets. The reason it took them so long was just because how much of a challenge it was, + working on remasters of other maps inbetween.
I think each one has its place, the water crossings in vanilla maps have always felt a bit off to me. While I prefer crossings that are simple (option 2 with just straight mud or dirt/sand), they are rarely like that and especially in the real Appalachia will have water doing crazy things, something that Beam lacks. I would say keep all of them as different difficulty sections and maybe add some of the smaller rock piles from Johnson Valley to the river for the extra character, they do look similar to some rocks I have seen around the Appalachians
This is current progress. The whole creek will likely be similar to these pics unless I find a way to make it look nicer.
Slowly progressing, map is maybe 40% complete now. I've been adding in rural housing, placing them as they'd be in the area in reality. The creek system is halfway done now, been working on trails through the woods, redesigned the 69 truck stop, and I've been laying the road decals. Everything is coming together slowly, but I will have to find a way to make everything run smoother. Not laggy yet, but definitely will be demanding when done. I am having trouble with ram now, collisions are disabled randomly for me sometimes. The mobile home prop mod is causing this I believe. I've got them placed and loading in, but my game still thinks they are player vehicles. Anyone know how I could fix this? I plan on adding lots of campers, tents, and other props, so I hope this can be fixed. EDIT : Any suggestions or critiques help alot, so let me know what you guys think so far.
My subjective opinion, but the asphalt is too black, such a thing is not found on the maps of developers
I'd say it just looks like a newly paved road (the dark black, how perfect it is). Maybe a little bit of lightening of the black and a little more roughness in parts would do the trick.
