I make modding videos, but because of that I have limited time to make a mod and release it. Because I'm so public, I get asked a lot to make mods for people, and even offered commissions (though they never start with a price they're willing to pay haha). It's gotten to the point where I just ignore requests. I'd like to make a video showcasing people who specifically do commission work. To this end, I'd like people who have done at least 1 fully paid commission mod in the past few months (the more commissions you've done, the better) to leave a comment with examples of what you've made, your going rate, and things you may specialise in. I understand that some people don't like to have their commission rates public, and publishing rates may make people feel like they'll get short changed in offers, so I'll ignore people low balling their prices (I believe people should get paid a fair rate). Keep in mind that if you put your name forward, you will probably get a lot of requests from kids that have no concept of money anyway... If this thread gets flooded with conversation instead of comments, consider DMing me instead.
Something to understand is that most people who do make mod commissions are not people who generally scratch model things or even put in a lot of effort. That has a simple reason: Making a scratch made mod where you only use your own, Beamng and maybe automation assets takes a shitload of time (in the case for a vertex even years). Compared to that, getting a model from another place into a game is really easy since beamnf does have many cars to base jbeam off of. If you were to pay a scratch modder minimum wage for the product that you pay for, you would end up paying hundred to thousands of dollars for it to be worthwhile for the 3d artist to even consider creating anything like that. And now if the person commissioning doesn't want the work to be sold to other people too it is essentially financial suicide to do full time work on a project with not even part time pay. So that means the only people who really take commissions are the ones who don't out in a lot of time or effort since that's the only way that commission are actually in any way shape of form profitable (not even taking customer satisfaction into Account.) So the short answer is: there are none.
Yeah basically any actually competent modder (especially ones who could/should be trusted with your money) will generally not accept commisions. The reason most of the time is, quite simply, making a dev quality mod for beamng takes a lot of time, in addition to research, specific knowledge, and most importantly passion for the project. For me at least I have more than enough mod ideas/things that I want to make in beam than I will likely ever be able to complete in a lifetime, and I suspect most others who have the skills to make quality mods also have no shortage of their own ideas to pursue out of their own desire, and thus there is no room to make a 2009 pruis because some kid on the froums wants one and is willing to pay a few dollars for it If you really want a mod for a specific car badly enough I think your only real option is to learn the process of modding, improve your skills over time and eventually with enough dedication you will be able to make whatever you desire yourself
Most commission mods are meshslap put together in a day, like others pointed out, for high quality stuff it's just not worth it ( since for the time I'd take you would basically expect a lot of money, which no one is willing to pay) I did make a commission for an engine swap for a V8 semi engine in a d series The funniest thing is that I just told the guy to buy me a copy of geometry dash
Ive never done a commission because ive never had anyone willing to pay the amount, i wouldnt say nobody will do commissions. Commissions would have to cost more than what my own paid mods earn since those would have to stop while I make it. If someone was willing to pay a rough estimate of 4-5k NZD per month then id be willing to make it but I know thats a lot for people. Older cars and simpler mods take somewhere around 3 months like my Silvia so theyd be at least 12k. More complex and bigger cars or more in depth mods with a lot of parts like the Signia or RUSH would take closer to 5 or 6 so theyd be at least 20k
That seems like a lot of money, but it's coming from one of the highest quality modders out here so I won't argue. Probably some other people would do it for half of this price, but it wouldn't be as good.
So i would agree with everyone on this thread and Say one extra thing : The one who makes the most money are the modders who release their mods on patreon and buy-me-a-coffee because they earn money every month
Depends on what exactly is being commissioned. Most people will assume you're talking about dev-quality cars, with polished, realistic handling, stable deformation, and various trim levels/bodystyles/configs/skins/parts & customization options, etc. Yeah, you're easily looking into the thousands for a fair price, and multiple quarters for the timeframe. For simpler things like levels, level assets, props, scenarios/missions, and part and skin packs, the price trends toward being more modest. Probably not in the price range of some of our (often clearly underage) community members, but in the hundreds, not the high thousands or tens of thousands.
It is a lot... but then again there is a ton of time that is put into mods like this. Sithhy and I once added up how much time we had into the B1 and then used the lowest 3D modeling salary we could find. It came out to about $50,000... each... that was over a year ago now.
Yeah it is but freelance gigs like this are by nature expensive, as the creator has to manage his taxes, the time it takes you out of the other paid projects you could do (modding or not) + making a living wage than can carry you onto your next potential client
I think it just takes too long to make a complete (Dev quality) mod to make commissions financially viable. I mean if you don't contribute anything. You're looking at 100's of hours of work, nobody is going to be like "Hey yeah Silver, I can make a 1984 Buick Skylark for 100 bucks". They are going to take every shortcut they can to make it as efficient as possible to maximize their profit. This does not even mention some of the paid mod patreon guys that are literally ripping models off and reselling them. These bad actors are the guys that make guys like LJ and Lucas look like they are money hungry. Money and modding is a very slippery slope. However it is an inevitable if a game becomes popular enough. All we can do is exercise due diligence and make sure you do research on anything you pay for.
modding is all about passion and fun, we can't have people make mods just for money and expect the mods to be good.
God damnit I already had an idea similar to this MONTHS AGO!!!! The more they change, the more they stay the same. Don't say I didn't warn you all.
What do you mean by "The more they change, the more they stay the same. Don't say I didn't warn you all."
