Blender is the main tool for modeling and making the actual car. That's all I know so far since I'm pretty new to modeling too.

I'm using Blender here too, it's immensely powerful once you get past the overwhelming UI.

Blender or 3ds Max would be good choices; though really any modelling program that can export to collada .dae will be alright for any models in the game (static objects and cars are essentially the same thing), unless of course it's crappy and you have difficulty modelling with it :D

It looks like your normals are messed up; select your whole car in edit mode and on the left panel (T) scroll down until you see "Recalculate". Normals are the way your faces are pointing, you should have them all facing "out" and make sure that they are all the same to avoid shading issues like you have there.

It might just be that I've gotten used to it but I really like the UI. 2.5 + has absolutely massive improvements to the UI; the old 2.49 and lower versions have quite possibly the most confusing UI I've ever seen.

That's very good. I prefer creating my own cars however also that way people can't really bug and nag you because the shape isn't quite right. It's a completely new car so noon can comment really.

    I am doing a different car by the way, a 1996 Rover 200 :p

    Also, quick question Gabe :)

How do you go about modelling your cars? Do you model the bodyshell first then split it up, or focus on the separate components (i.e. hood, bumper etc..)

I usually start with one polygon on the side and just extrude out from there to form the basic body shell. Then I refine it and smooth out the hard edges. Then I detach the panels and start modeling the various underbody components.

As far as i am aware that is the only thing most people use. Thats the only thing ive ever used in my 7 years or so of modeling.
