After changing the shader option from the default "High" to anything else and pressing "Apply", it crashes, every time.

Try using the Update program in the Drive folder.

I have had similar issues however I only crash after loading, returning to main menu and trying to change the settings. Until they come out with a fix, if you haven't tried yet, change graphics from performance to quality and vice versa. I also recommend leaving most functions to application controlled. The method of doing this depends on your GPUs designer, ATI or Nvidia. Both of them you right click desktop, for Nvidia, its the Nvidia Control Panel, for ATI, it's Catalyst Control Center.

Currently there is a known bug with setting the shaders to lowest causing a crash.
