So I started building this computer out of parts I got for free it was originally a dell dimension 2400, and still mostly is. The plan is to buy 4-6 gigs of ram, windows 7, a cheap, old graphics card and its original cooling system. If that doesnt work, I'll rewire my other one that the person I got it from took the wires from the fan out. My garbage design also lacks a power button. Edit: pics
They forgot to solder AGP bus on that motherboard, pre 2000 technology? It has those PATA cables that were for improved data transfer rates, I remember when I got those, but can't remember what system it was, that must be close to 20 years old system.
Windows 7 is a good choice, 10 would be an even bigger disaster in that computer. (Windows 8.1 could be actually pretty good too)
The copyright said 2003. Close though. --- Post updated --- I really, REALLY hate windows 8. I would use unix or linux before I used windows 8
Classic Shell helps with Win8 angst, it makes thing work more like Win7 and previous ones, lot closer to XP actually than Win7 if you put all tweaks in. I just wonder if Win7 is good for that computer, might be that WindowsXP is pretty much what it can run. Also where you can find memory for that as it does not use anything even close to modern memory?
Your best bet for outdated memory is Amazon or Ebay. Also, I'd just install a Ubuntu on the pc, would make it a lot less of a pain in the ass. --- Post updated --- I googled the PC and found the user manual for the Dimension 2400. Says there it takes DDR1 RAM and only up to 2GB.
Vista with 2GB is not fun, probably Win 7 either, but even Linux does want more than 2GB to be smooth, but luckily one can customize it quite well. Linux is free to test and use though.
Use that if it works, should accept lots more ram too and has AGP slot. I guess those have same socket for CPU? You might find some cheap used CPU with the memory, if Pentium III fits that would be kinda strong. Can't remember those socket numbers anymore, it has been a while, but those were good old times
