Currently, the check engine light only comes on when the engine has completely failed. It would be more realistic to have it come on when the engine gets impact damage (shock at high speed) or when the engine starts ticking or knocking when overheating or running on no oil.
posts like this should definitely get more traction i mean if overheating and head gasket failure and stuff is enough to trigger a ui warning, why not add it to the dash too? none of the oil or temp lights even light up at all lol
