Hi there, I'm following the modding scene of different games for over 15 years now. I never made the transition to be a modder myself, but i've modded a lot of games thanks to all the great content creators in the web. Also i've seen a lot of communities and read a lot of WIP threads. My obversations in this time were these: -big projects take a lot of time -big projects are often managed by modteams -big projects often never get done entirely because it takes a lot of time and modteams may break up after a while -With better graphics modding gets more and more complicated -its hard to create a big map and its even harder to fill them with content To help these problems i had an idea quite a while ago. It mostly applies to maps, but it could work for Vehicles too. What about an content creation repository besides the mod repository? The idea is to have a place where people can provide and download: -Textures of eg. pavements, grass, sand, gravel, faces of buildungs etc. -Assets like houses, roadsigns, trees, benches, bus stops etc. -Sounds -All the other Stuff which comes handy to fill a mod/map with life Modders not willing to invest hundreds of hours or somebody whose just starting to mod can pick a small project like a lamppost and it would still have its use(not saying that otherwise it wouldnt). Eg for somebody who isn't that good in modeling but need some easily accesible assets. After some time with the power of the hive we could have a huge repository of prebuild stuff. I mean it takes years and hundreds of people to create a world like San Andreas of GTAV. It takes months to create official maps for Beamng. IMHO everybody in this community could profit when modders also upload their work into the content creation repository. Instead of hunting somebody offline in this forum for 2 years in the web to ask if you can use his bicycle asset it would already be in the repository.Sure, there gonna be some problems, too. Eg I have no idea how a good crediting system would work. But all in all it could be a great thing. So, what do you think? Possible, neat, brainfart of the year, utopian, use the goddamn search function?
I must say, this was written very well and clearly has much thought put into it and as somebody who has tried (although i only have a couple hours of experience with the level editor) making maps aswell as the many maps that the community continue to make. This is a great idea and considering the friendliness of many of the upper tier modders such as Aboroath, Ouerbacker and Bob Blunderton (sorry, i missed many of them but you get the point) who are wiling to let the community use their assets as long as they are credited, a creation of what you are suggesting would be a great addition to the forums to aid map makers in their creation of them. However such a task like this would take lots of time and the withdrawal of some of the devs for it to be created. The benefit in the long run would be enormous considering the usefulness and ease of access of something like an assets repo. It would be great if this idea could be put forward and made to happen, hopefully the devs see this. CreasingCurve
I like this idea. It seems like it could work pretty well, so long as the content submitted is quality controlled. Im also wondering how the copyright system would work for this. I dont know anything about copyrights though.
It should work the same as the mods repo and considering there are barely any people who make custom assets for the maps in this community it shouldn't be much of an ask to get several community members to volunteer to quality control the assets that get submitted if it becomes too much for the current Quality control users, e.g Synsol and Meywue. I also do not now much about copyrights and all of its rules, but im sure they could put a system in place that would make sure that the author is credited for the use of their assets in another users map.
The copy rights: Summary: you still own it, but beamng can use it any way they want and like. If you create, transfer, share, send, submit, post or upload any User Generated Content you will still own the User Generated Content (assuming you have rights to own it) but you grant BeamNG the right to use your User Generated Content to the extent outlined below without the need of further permission or without any form of compensation. By transferring, sharing, sending, submitting, posting, uploading or making available User Generated Content on beamng.com or any of BeamNG's services, you grant BeamNG a worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive right and fully sub-licensable license to use, copy, reproduce, distribute, publish, publicly perform, publicly display, modify, adapt, translate, archive, store the User Generated Content, and create derivative works from your User Generated Content, in any form, format or medium of any kind now known or later developed and for the entire duration of the intellectual property rights.
I agree with @CreasingCurve. This was very well written and pleasant to read and the idea in itself is really good too. I would love to see this get implemented as it would help the modding community.
