Hey guys I have a pretty unique setup, running a macbook pro with a GTX 970 as the dedicated graphics over thunderbolt 2. For most games this DIY eGPU setup is fantastic, however on more CPU intensive games (like BeamNG) I run into frustrating amounts of intermittent lag. The GPU has no issue with the game, the CPU is clearly the bottleneck here. What sort of settings combinations could ensure the CPU is stressed the least, while also hopefully taking as much advantage of the card I have as possible?

There is only one setting which can reduce CPU load and that is disabling collisions in advanced settings.

i assume you are dual booting windows right? if you have the problem that beamng runs smooth for a short while and then slows down to a crawl i might have a solution for you.

the problem is the cpu overheating and clocking itself down to prevent damage. but you can prevent this by stopping the cpu from using turbo-boost.
i had this problem on a 2011 macbook pro and the solution was the following:
in the control center go to system - energy options - change energy plan - advanced energy settings - and change max power state to 99%.
the names might be wrong since my operating system is in german but i will attach pictures to show you where to look.

also you might want to look into a fan control app for your macbook to keep temperatures down.
there are some but i dont remember what they were called.
