I'm learning much of this as I go. I'm making it in blender, then use this tutorial to get a heightmap (with 16bit BW), then I convert it to a ingestible PNG format in corel paintshop pro (because it was cheap in a humble bundle), and it goes in fine into BeamNG.

This issue is the one I've had for quite some time. The map has large steps (ridges) instead of being gentile slopes. When I have a look in blender is a smooth image, but the exported image has banding, then the exported corel version has banding, I tried gaussian blur (with the contrast up so bottom is pure black, and the top is pure white) and the banding is still really bad inside corel itself!

is there a common sense thing that I'm missing, or is this just not do-able from blender?

I'm working on this as I write this, so far I've gotten many different images from blender, including a bmp which looked smoother, but was quite dimpled (making it really bad in beamNG) and had a similar number of colours in it (corel gives me a count) of around the 150-170 range.... I tried blurring the "smooth looking" BMP, and it just reverted to banding, with similar results for the compressed formats. (in corel I do increase colour depth to 16 bit too whilst editing)

Could you attach a screenshot of the issue? Might be easier to understand than just pure text
