Does the Steam version of BeamNG Drive allow mods?

Hi guys, I got a new PC recently and I had been waiting to try BeamNG, and it has been great so far.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but does the Steam version allow mods to be installed? I have only tried to add one new map so far, the map shows up in game, but when it loads it loads one of the default maps. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, I would have expected the game to crash if the map shows up in game but I had not installed it correctly.

Apologies if this has been asked before, I had a look through the threads but I couldn't find this issue where the mods were showing up in game, the game would load successfully, but it was loading the wrong thing.
