how would i go about making tank treads?

i am planning to make wheels like this:

as selectable wheels on all cars
how would i go about doing this?

i have an idea of how to do this. simply (well not really) make an animation for the tracks rotating but use two invisible wheels that would sit inside the area of the tracks and would work in a similiar way to Chris Lucas's train that uses invisible wheels that actually propel the train and just have those invisible wheels which actually drive the tracked vehicle. some of it is left to the imagination but the concept is there.

 

"may not even work particularly well when finished" seems like the understatement of the year when it comes to trying to make a caterpillar track using jbeam! ;-)

I'm pretty sure that's not how the Planet class locomotive works...?

 

I am aware that the loco doesn't work like this, i meant it is a similar principle with the actual wheels of the train basically being an animation almost, with an invisible set of wheels that touch the tracks which propel the train like a car but on train tracks.
