I have been working on some 3d models in sketchup and wondered if anyone knew what needed to be done to bring them into the right files to make a mod. Specifically I have modeled a DOHC V8 for the ETK K series (though i suspect the game devs have plans for this themselves) and want to add it to the etk engine file if possible. I am new to this and used sketchup because I am familiar with it and Blender seems way more complicated to use IMO. Any input is appreciated.

in general, you dont. Sketchup rarely exports objects into .DAE properly and polyflow within sketchup is usually completely wrong for a game. Hence nobody using it, its not a blender master race type affair, its a genuine case of Sketchup really not faring too well with modelling for BeamNG.

But yeah, if you can get sketchup to export to a .dae properly with your v8 mesh appearing as a single object within that dae rather than 1 object for each vertice as sketchup loves to do (and just about anything that uses DAE will puke on) you can do it easily enough. You would not insert it into the etk engine file though. You'd create new files instead which the game will load.

I know right, Sketchup is useless for video game modeling! I can't imagine that anyone could make a half decent mod with it:rolleyes:

Now to answer your question, yes, it's entirely possible. But you need to do it right, otherwise it won't work properly.

First, it's important that you explode the model entirely before exporting (when you export grouped models from Sketchup to .DAE, it kinda screws it up)

You also have to be careful of intersecting geometry, seeing as exploding will cause them to intersect and ruin the shading of your model.

If you have any more questions, I'd be happy to answer them;)

Oh it can be coerced alright considering yeah I've seen it done and once managed it myself, but I think bakasan stands as the sole minority now.

I kinda figured it would be something like that. I will see what I can do.

Well, I managed to get my V8 base engine block into Blender as one object (I had to select the 25 objects it initially had and join them, but it seems to have worked) now I need to add a UV map and vertex colors I think, but I am lost with this. my previous modeling experience has all been parametric modeling for things like 3d printers and CNC operations. I think Ill spend some time with some tutorials later this week.
