Hello all, I have a laptop, specs in my signature, that I have used for around a year, maybe 11 months. When I got my laptop, it was always quite hot, I never checked but it always ramped up the fans under even the slightest loads. I have been noticing, since I installed CPUID Hardware monitor, that it gets extremely hot. When I start it up it is around 80 degrees C, the lowest in the last few days is around 75. Under light loads, maybe 90-95, which is already way too hot for me. YouTube at 1080p (I have a 766p screen so it does almost nothing) it goes to 100+ and gaming, even for a very small amount of time, 110 degrees C, when the CPU starts to throttle. I know AMD always runs hotter, I know that now, but I was naive when I got it. I have stopped using my laptop, 1 because my PC is faster, 2 the overheating problem, just for safety. The warranty is void I think, due to me installing Windows 7 which is worth it from Windows 8 because I HATE Windows 8, 8.1 is meh but I still think I would rather have Windows 7. I need help on how to clean the fans/filters/whatever they are, I'm good with Desktops but Laptops I just can't (yet). Thanks!
Theres not that much you can do, i had that problem with my older laptop and when it got too hot it would shut down by itself. What i did to fix that problem is i disassembled it and cleaned the fans. its easy but for laptops its a bit of a challenge. i did mine wrong but nothing happened, i didnt have any anti static wristband or anything like that. Just try to disassemble it, i suggest to do that on a table and keep your screws in a way where you know witch one goes where. depending on your laptop model, you might have to remove the motherboard, start off by removing your battery and hdd and the ram, and disassemble it. If you remove the heat sinks you will also break the thermal compound seal, i didnt replace mine when i did it with my laptop and after i cleaned my fans it was still cold enough. One of my friends has a temporary replacement for thermal compound, he used toothpaste, but its temporary. I used toothpicks and Q-tips with rubbing alcohol to clean the fans. after your done cleaning your fans, reassemble it. and what i did was i made myself a lego stand so theres space between my laptop so that air can have a nice flow. I hope i helped a bit. Good luck
Replace thermal paste and clean fans. Clean any dust that might be blocking vents. If that doesn't work, you can always stick an H100i in the laptop at the cost of some portability. (if you're too stupid to figure it out, that was a joke)
You dont ever want to run your computer above 100c. Anything above 100c for any length of time is likely to cause damage. Just do what i do in the summer and place your laptop on top of a large fan (that you have set down flat)
First and easiest step is to get a can of compressed air (~$5 at a grocery store) and blow through the bottom vents to get out any dust. If there's massive dust buildup this has a good chance of solving the problem. If it doesn't, look up how to replace laptop thermal paste. Costs anywhere from ~$2-15 to do it depending on whether you use quality paste or not. (Even cheap paste should work a lot better than it is now.) Depending on the model of your laptop it could be as easy as taking off a bottom panel and removing the heatsink or as hard as disassembling the entire laptop. Use a napkin or something to get off most of the paste from the heatsink and CPU/GPU/whatever contacts it (If there are any thermal pads leave those alone) and then use a spot on your napkin or whatever with rubbing alcohol (If you don't already have a bottle, it's like $1 at a store.) on it to clean it even more, then use a shirt or microfiber cloth to clean it once more and get off any alcohol. Then apply a very small amount of new paste and put it all back together.
Well... I took it apart, to the point where I could get to the fans, without taking out or having to break the bond in the thermal paste and I used my dad's air compressor (he normally used it for cars considering he has a 3 litre v8 currently taken apart in his garage but it's free so fuck it) at the lowest setting and blasted the fans, put it back together and now it sits at 35 degrees C at idle and maybe 65 under load, it's the coolest I've had this laptop to date! Well anyway, thanks for the input, it is always much appreciated. Thanks guys!
