After reading some comments on people responding on videos about video game driving physics, many people complained that the handling in beamng felt wrong, this was because those people used the least precise input method for steering, the keyboard, instead of using the mouse to steer. I also felt the same way until I tweaked the settings to use mouse for steering, throttle and brakes, I think this will help much more people enjoy beamng and improve opinions about driving in this game.
perhaps what they are looking for is this mod: https://www.beamng.com/resources/advanced-steering.24284/ it certainly isn't trackmania or nfs, but it is possible to drive with a kb on a par with the analogue alternatives. for example, the smooth key filter (in the vehicle controls options) is "tailored for digital controls like keys or buttons. it will gradually apply your input over a few tenths of a second. advanced drivers can constantly tap the button to control the amount of input. in the case of steering keys, some additional logic will make it slightly easier to stay close to optimum cornering forces". and of course the driving assistants for understeering and oversteering. so in my opinion any input method is valid and can be competitive
although with mouse, there's no need for artificial control, as you are in full control of the steering rather than a computer aiding you, which is much more realistic
Sure it might not be as competitive, but arrow keys is a more intuitive setup for most players which I think is the more important goal of the default controls. Especially one given how many key binds there are.
The forums would be flooded with people asking why arrows don't work if mouse was the default. Why don't ask about the steering preset during the initial setup and let the user choose?
I'm quite confident Forza kids would prefer a gamepad. Also, don't gatekeep, let people have fun they way they want.
i think it should ask the player on the first start to choose, like the controls in euro truck sim, and also tell you where you can toggle it in the settings
just no. every other game has arrow controls for steering and mouse steering is a very niche thing to do and certainly requires some getting used to. mouse steering even isnt the best because there is no absolute positioning with it: if you want to return the steering wheel to the center, then you will need to actually move the mouse back, not like in every other game, including beam, just let go of the arrow key and it will automatically return back mouse steering in general is awkward unless gotten used to
Mouse driving is absolute fun if you give it a try for a few weeks. It can give you a maximum control while being cheap and having a free desk for other PC tasks. Also real racing performance and even drifting is very good playable. Please (dear devs ) don't underestimate the mouse option as a primary controler. Why not simply letting us activate mouse control by a double click and release it again by another double click. This action is unused means has no other pupose yet and you could easily switch between mouse active or not. Sometimes you need the mouse e.g. for car configuration or triggers and then you could also easily decouple your mouse temporarily from the car in the way mentioned above. I would be very glad if mouse driving friends don't get out of focus... PS: It is very important to adjust a balance between OS mouse accelaration and ingame mouse control linearity. I prefer the following settings: Steering: linearity of 1.7 with no deadzone Combined throttle&brake: linearity 1.6, deadzone rest: 0.05, deadzone end 0.37, inverted axis Shifter: Z/X key (german Y/X) Clutch: left shift key Clutch and throttle assistants active Low but enabled OS mouse acceleration, medium speed (not Windows' default) All maxima are easily reachable out of wrist and finger movement, heel of hand firmly on the desk as an anchor, little finger tip in permanent contact with mouse AND desk as a sensor. Than it rocks
