My pc has had malware for a while now and it's getting really annoying with all the ads, and I need some recommended antivirus programs.

I think I got malware from those damn Russian mods a while back...

My mcafee program says unwanted site named genericpup.y and when I click remove it doesn't remove and mcafee just keeps on popping up and saying to remove it, but it won't.

The first thing that appears are a set of instructions that tell you to install Malwarebytes. Sit the hell down.

It's quicker and more efficient to direct OP to a set of instructions readily available elsewhere than writing that shit here. What I should or shouldn't have done is not up for debate, and any following threads appearing on this forum regarding malware will get a lmgtfy link as well.

Malwarebytes, the free version. Does it job good, and you don't have to spend a cent.

Malwarebytes (free) as @Nadeox1 said. I use it exclusively and it works very well. Also I heard AdwCleaner is good for removing ads.

When I have to fix a bloated laptop/PC I usually use these in combo:

    MalwareBytes
    AdwCleaner

And Windows Defender as ordinary anti-virus is more than good.
    Paid anti-virus are a joke.

Was this a local/chain tech service store, or some random online site?
If you get your computer professionally cleaned up, when you get it back install the free versions of Avast antivirus and Malwarebytes. Avast, or any other well rated free active antivirus, will protect you from threats in real time. Malwarebytes, run once every week or two, will make sure that anything that gets through your active antivirus is quashed.
In general, it's stupid to pay for antivirus these days. Norton, especially, is a favorite of bloatware pushers, and is an expensive, cancerous pile of words not fit for tender ears. If the company cleaning your system tries to push any kind of trial for a paid antivirus program on you, firmly decline.
