From certain camera angles its very easy to slip with the mouse.
Try looking more down from above to reduce the chance if it happening.
Editing terrain with the camera looking across the map like in your picture will make a small mouse movement up the screen into edited terrain a long way off in the distance.

    Hope this helps :)

Exactly! I wonder though because the effect always seems to happen at the same place on my map. Definitely had
problems with the "wandering brush" when at low oblique angles.

I have also had it happen when using the smooth slope tool near an area of terrain that wont go any lower, but this was clearly happening near the mouse cursor and not off in the distance. So I don't think this is the problem the op is having. Worth a mention anyway.

Yes, it's because of the camera angle..., if i look down from above, it doesn't happen.
/EDIT: But that does not make sense, when i raise a hill with this camera angel 2.jpg , it happens too, how can i slip with the mouse then?

I guess because you aren't looking straight down from above. The camera angle looks almost identical to your first picture.
From the camera angle you have in that picture, if you raise the terrain, you will move your cursor up with the hill as its being formed. The top of the hill isn't very wide and if you slip off the back of the hill, your cursor will be off in the distance behind it. Shouldn't be a problem if there is no terrain behind it though. I'm not sure where the slip up is in this picture.

Look straight down so you can't see the horizon and it wont happen as easily. I know its hard to tell how high you have raised the terrain when looking straight down, so you will have to be changing camera angles a lot.

I'm pretty sure this is not a bug as such.

Maybe a video of it happening will help us.

Now that is weird, I have not seen that before.

What is the size and position of the terrain?
If your heightmap is 1024 x 1024 the you should really set its position to -1024 -1024 This will put the middle of your terrain in the center of the map. Also make sure the lowest point in your terrain is above the physical bottom of the world.
Not sure if thats going to help, but I know the further away from the center of the map you go, the more bug's appear.

I'm not sure what else to suggest. But that is defiantly not normal.

Definitely weird. Definitely a Torque thing. Good advice from jammin and try it. I'm away from my PC but really anxious to look at this.

Awesome, glad you got it sorted!

Was your terrain a long way from the center just out of interest?
