Hello all, I'm on the verge of purchasing the game and I had some questions. Basically, I just want to wreck some cars. Are all the cars modded in or is there a default set? How simple is it to mod the game to add more cars? Are there tutorials on how to do just about everything? Thanks for helping out the new guy!!
First off, welcome to the forums. If you're only talking about the official vehicles, the game will come with all of them, except for the three unreleased ones that has yet to see release in the future. As for modded content found on both the forums and repository, those you'll have to download. Also, when installing mods, don't install them in the games Steam directory. A special folder for BeamNG will be made in Documents, and inside it will be a mods folder. That is where you need to install any downloaded mods at. Modding in new cars is very difficult, and I mean, VERY difficult.
1. There is a default set of cars, from the brands: Gavril Ibishu Bruckell Civetta ETK And probably more I've forgot about. 2. Depends on what you're doing, if you're just editing power and stuff and creating your own config without blender work, it should take around 5 minutes to an hour and a half, but if you're starting off by scratch with creating a car, you're looking at months or even years. 3. Yes, there are. You'll have to get used to the interface but it's very simple. It's also not recommended to run BeamNG on a lower end machine, otherwise you'll be looking at massive lag problems. BeamNG.drive is a game that's crafted by a creative mind and an intelligent community, if you don't know what you're doing with the game then it'll be hard to have fun.
Alright, jumping in to answer a question answered 2x over... Modders will sometimes use official names, so just going off the vehicle name isn't a great way to figure out what is official and what isn't. You can look at the wiki on this website for the list of official content (+20 official cars and a good amount of maps, with more in development) along with info/release dates (some content on the wiki is unreleased at the moment). The wiki also has tutorials on most things, it's good for simple stuff and there is a F&Q there. The official mod repository is a 1 click system, just hit "install". If it is acting up you'll have to install it manually but that's usually simply, see MisterKen's comment for instructions on that. Mods on third party websites are often low quality, improperly set up, or stolen so beware, they can contain viruses. Mods on the official repository are checked by staff to make sure they work and do not contain malware. Creating a decent mod yourself is incredibly difficult. As states before, make sure your computer can handle the game. It has been optimized well since the most recent tech demo was released, but better safe than sorry. Welcome to the forums and have fun with the game, it's easy to rack up a lot of hours on if you're creative. Remember this is a physics simulator, there's a lot more to do than just crashing.
Wow! Thank you all for your comments. I wasn't truly aware of how difficult modding in new cars would be. I'm glad I asked. What about skins though? Are skins something I would be able to do with, say, a template of the car and just bring it in? Am I looking for too much too soon? I appreciate it so much everyone!
Yes, some official and even modded cars come with skin templates. Skinning is far easier than making new vehicles. I would be open to helping you with any skins you may make, but ATM the main computer I use for BeamNG related stuff is out of commission, so I can't do anything related to it for a while.
skins are pretty quick and easy to make once you know what you're doing. here's a few handy links if you've got the game: https://wiki.beamng.com/Introduction_to_skin_system https://wiki.beamng.com/Simple_skin_tutorial
I totally get that, but my goodness they look fantastic...lol Is there somewhere I can see the minimum specs for a computer? My computer is definitely not a low end machine, but I just want to make sure. Awesome! I don't know how much I'll actually be skinning, but I think it would be something I'd like to do. Especially if it's something I can do in Photoshop and just bring in.
Installing mods is pretty easy, but making new ones requires a pretty good amount of time to be invested in learning how to make them. Skins should be pretty easy though, there are a bunch of skin mods that you should be able to look at to get an idea of how they work.
Skins and configs are the easiest stuff to do, then come the custom stuff like engines and after them they are stuff like different body styles and so on. The top of the ice berg are the vehicle mods and this is why you should download them ONLY from this site, do not get foolet by some ferrari or lambo on some russian site, they are actually only stollen model stuck on the Grand Marshal or the Bolide. I suggest getting the grips on the game and only of you know all of the functions and features, then you could start modding it.
Making a skin is relatively easy, but as usual it depends on what you are trying to make. For a beginner I would recommend starting with either skins or license plates. If the wiki doesn't make sense to you (It didn't when I first started out) there are a few YouTube videos out there that can help you and if that still doesn't do the trick you can always come back to the forums to ask for help.
