So, as some of you guys now I'm getting a new PC soon, but I've been wondering what GPU to choose for a long time. I'm probably not going to spend more than 370 euro on a GPU, and I've found 2 good GPU's I could buy. This PC is mainly going to be used for 1080p gaming, and for a double display setup in general. I could either buy an EVGA GTX 970 , or a XFX Radeon R9 390 , or a Sapphire Radeon R9 390. I can also get an MSI R9 390. Now my question is, which one would you guys recommend? I still have a couple months before I'm buying this PC, so I thought I'd ask the community here. Also I wonder, is there anyway to get a VGA monitor to work on the Radeon ? Because from what I see, it doesn't have DVI-I support, and the 2nd monitor I'm going to use is an old VGA monitor. Other specs of what I'm going to get : CPU : Intel Core i5-6600k @ 3.5 GHz CPU COOLER : Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo PSU : Cooler Master B600 Ver.2 HDD : WD Blue WD10EZEX 1TB CASE : Corsair Carbide 300R Windowed RAM : 2X or 4X Crucial CT4G4DFS8213 DDR4 4GB MOBO : Asus Z170-P
I would say the R9 390 is the better buy, since you've got the PSU to handle it. The GTX 970, which I have, is a great card but lacks the brute power and struggles with higher resolutions.
It really comes down to the games you play. If they are optimized for NVIDIA, go for the 970. Otherwise, I recommend the 390. It's a really close comparison though. Fanboys can really fight about it (lol).
In terms of performance they're actually very similar with the Radeon being just slightly more powerful. I'd go with the GTX 970 for Shadowplay and GameWorks, and because the R9 390 has the heat output of a small nuclear reactor. Unless you're planning on high resolution gaming (over 1440p), then AMD performs better.
Lets see... I guess that you gonna use that PC for BeamNG (Among other games), so go with an ""old"" i7, like the 4790K and put it on a Cheap 1150 mobo instead (You're not going to overclock it, that CPU itselft goes up to 4.4 GHz with Turbo), buying an Z97 board for it doesnt make sense considering that the highest OC that you would achieve is 4.8 GHz). That CPU beats the 6600K, even in single thread processing.
It does, but the reason I'm going for the 6600k is mainly because it's cheaper, and because this way upgrading later will probably be a bit easier, because I probably won't need to completely replace my MOBO. 4790k : http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/394885/intel-core-i7-4790k-boxed.html 6600k : http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/457396/intel-core-i5-6600k-boxed.html This PC is mainly going to be used for games like BNG, GTA V and so on, but also for both GPU (I-ray) and CPU (Keyshot) rendering and modeling.
Man, dont bother about upgrading, that is what I've been saying since Sandy Bridge... And 4 years later, the 2600K is still one of the best CPU you can get. I'm gonna tell you one thing, I remember when people started choosing the 4770K over the 3770, when the 3770 was cheaper and cooler, and I could be overclocked via No K OC, (Something completely blocked on 1150, yeah Intel!), they said Broadwell will be the next huge step, it will perform twice due to its 14nm process and bla bla bla, then Intel launched two new chipsets H97 and Z97 which are the only ones that support Broadwell, so whoever that paid more for a Z87 motherboard + 4770K over a Z77 motherboard + 3770 (No K OC) expecting to get that "next step" just wasted money. xD And finally that day has come and Broadwell is here guys and its a total a disaster. xD the 5775c performs even WORSE than the 4790K. You have to consider all combo price, compare B85/H81/H97 motherboard + 4790K vs 6600K + Z170. It should be the same price or even cheaper. Also, if you gonna render, get that i7 you'll love those 8 threads a lot when rendering.
That's pretty bad considering the 390 has a massive heatsink. The 970 is probably a blower cooler too, since mine stays at 60-65C under heavy load, so not a fair comparison at all. The 390 also exhausts a LOT more heat in order to keep a similar core temperature, and with an open cooler blowing that hot air inside the case it will increase CPU temperatures too. But hey, it's still a beast card. And DX12 benchmarks show AMD getting a massive edge over Nvidia, so it might be a good choice.
It was a 390 MSI cooler compared to a 970 SSC so its not that far off at all considering the SSC is one of the better coolers for the 970. But yeah they are pretty competitive with one and other and both are pretty good choices tbh.
the biggest issue for me is still the price, and even the way you said it the 4790k still comes more expensive than the 6600k. 6600k + MSI z170 PC Mate is around 370 euro total, 4790k + ASRock H97 is around 420 euro total, 4790k + ASRock B85 is around 410 euro total, and 4790k + ASRock H81 is also around 410 euro, which makes the new gen about 40 euro cheaper still, + the fact that prices will come down a bit more later on probably, and I still have 4 months.
Personally, I'd go with a 970, but note "PERSONALLY." I can never go with an AMD card because my YouTube channel wouldn't exist without Nvidia's shadowplay!! 0 FPS loss when using it, 1080p 60fps
