If you launch and you havent put in a key before it asks you for your key and it checks whether it is valid in the server database or not
If you didnt put in an approved online key yet it just shuts down and next time it asks you for key again
If your key is valid you just play

this is the optimal DRM system for next versions IMO

You dont need to check your key online everytime you launch just the first time you put in a key to avoid excessive DRM

And i dont know how this could get in the way of legit buyers besides rare cases

Doesn't it already do this? I think it does anyway because I remember inputting my key.

I havent played alpha yet so I thought that it only asks the key to update and install

It already does this, I only had to put in my serial key when I first installed, now I can just play regularly.

we already deploy some kind of copy protection, no need to restrict the users more in any way :)
