I've been dealing with this problem for quite some time, and I have sorta figured out what's causing it, but still not 100%. Basically, on any map (less often on less performance intensive maps, like gridmap), I am having sometimes light, to sometimes severe FPS drops. It's been occurring since 0.27, or possibly one of it's hotfixes. There's 2 issues, and I'll try to explain them both.

    Issue 1:
Vsync causes spikes in the "CPU" section of the performance graph, and is labeled as "framePresent". This issue only really occurs when Vsync is enabled. The spikes in the CPU section corresponds to the FPS drops seen above in the performance graph.

    Issue 2:
Major spikes in "Update" section, labeled as "Physics". This issue, along with issue 1, happen randomly, but make the game quite annoying to play. It may be related to shadows, but I'm not 100% sure that's the reason...

Just as a quick question, does anyone else with a GTX 1650 experience this?

    Video:

    Specs:
    Intel Core i5-9300H
    Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650
    16GB DDR4 RAM
1 TB Samsung SATA SSD (the drive the game is installed to, windows isn't installed here)

My specs are very similar to yours, and I'm having this same issue. It's quite annoying and I haven' figured out a solution either.

Well, at least I'm not the only one lol. I thought that the problem would have been with my computer, and that would've just been an even bigger task to find the cause...
I also thought it was the driver, but I went back to one that was many versions old, same problem... So I don't think i'ts the driver that's causing the problem...

Same deal with the 1650. Might just be a bug with these specific GPUs then? That's odd...
    --- Post updated ---
The Vsync issue is less annoying than the other since it only drops my FPS by 10-15 FPS, but lasts a while, whereas the 2nd issue with the "Physics" spikes, makes the game unplayable most of the time, dropping my FPS down to about 15-20, sometimes even lower.
This is a video showing Issue 2, and was recorded pre 0.28 (it still occurs in 0.28):

Here's a clip of the 1st issue. It's normally not this severe, but it is quite close... (vid was recorded in 0.27.2, but still occurs in 0.28)

I honestly don't even know what's happening anymore... I've tried everything... Game is almost unplayable, and there is no way to solve this problem...

I also can't really tell if the bug has to do with the CPU or the GPU. The "framePresent" spikes are in the CPU portion of the graph, whereas the "ShadowMapPass" spikes are in the GPU portion of the graph. There's also the "Physics" spikes in both the CPU and Update portions of the graph. I just don't know if they're related to each other or not...

    Same issue here.

    Updated to 0.28 yesterday.
Played a derby with 9 cars on ultra graphics settings - around 30fps and totally playable.
3 races later and I'm back down to 8-9fps - changing to lowest graphics having minimal effect.

    No Mods Active.

Tried restarting, verifying files and even repasting.

    Specs:
    AMD Ryzen 5 4600H
    GTX 1660ti
    32GB RAM

EDIT: Running in Safe Mode and I'm getting up 40-45 FPS

Interesting... Since you don't have an Intel CPU, I'm starting to think that its more likely a bug in the game that has to do with the GPU...

I also have the same problem as you... I see no improvement when setting the graphics settings to lowest. At one point, ultra graphics on Italy gave me more FPS than Normal/Low... Very weird...

Did you check your VRAM usage when the issue occurs? You can check it in the task manager -> Performance -> GPU section.
    Taskmgr_m9bPsogKej.png

Did you try to play on low/lowest texture settings straight away, instead of changing settings when issue appears? Does the issue occur then?

I loaded up task manager while the issue was occurring, but I didn't see any spikes, or maxed out values in the GPU section.
    Screenshot3.png Screenshot5.png Screenshot6.png
I did however find that limiting the FPS to ~30 completely removed the spikes, whereas setting the FPS limit to 60 was the same as leaving it unlimited, with or without Vsync.
    Screenshot7.png Screenshot8.png

When changing the graphics to lowest before entering the map, the issue is not present, and it also turns out that sometimes, when changing the graphics to low when the issue is occurring, it also improves it.

It's really hard to pinpoint the issue. I tested a few things, and the results were not the same. I tried setting the graphics to lowest, then individually setting each setting to what I use. The setting change that causes the spikes to appear changes each time. Sometimes it's setting Lighting Quality to high, or enabling bloom, or enabling motion blur, or setting texture quality to normal, etc.

But what's for sure is that the spikes appear only when Vsync is enabled. But even with Vsync off, I still can't get 60FPS half the time on more performance intensive maps, like I did before.

What driver version do you have? I once had a very similar issue on a 1650 laptop a few months ago. I updated drivers and I wasn't able to reproduce the issue anymore. Unfortunately, I don't have that device anymore to look into it :(
Does your device have a variable refresh rate screen (VRR), G-Sync, FreeSync, etc?

I have driver version 531.41. I've also tried 527.56, 517.48, 472.12, and even the one that Windows 10 installs on it's own when you uninstall the GPU from device manager (Some version from May of 2022).
My screen doesn't have VRR, G-Sync or FreeSync, I'm only able to use VSync.

Also started in Clean Boot, issue still present...

This was my last attempt: Tried rolling back/removing windows updates until I reached one that was installed before 0.27... Issue still present. Nothing else I can do...

Tried renaming my game folder to 0.28 backup - thus creating a new game folder.
    Did not resolve the issue.

Tried Safe Mode again but this time I had 8 FPS.

Switching between Normal and Ultra - Still 8 FPS.

When I pause the game the FPS counter jumps up.

Here's what I've tried so far (all have not worked):
    -Cleared cache
    -Safe Mode
    -Rolled back graphics driver
    -Reinstalled BeamNG
    -Clean Boot
-Used Integrated Graphics (Very slow but has the spikes)
    -Uninstalled Windows updates
-Performed a "Power/Hard Reset" (Disconnected battery, and held down power button for 30 seconds, then reconnected the battery)
    -Disabled Anti-Virus Software
    -Reinstalled Windows 10
-Installed BeamNG on Windows Drive instead of 2nd SSD

    I've done everything I can...

Update: I just tested something else, and I think I now know what's causing the FPS drops/spikes: Shadows and Vsync...
The spikes in the CPU section only appear when Vsync and shadows are both enabled... It also seems that the spikes are triggered by a setting change, like changing graphics settings... And sometimes just loading into the map does it...

Edit: Any "Lighting Quality" setting above the "Lowest" quality, with shadows and vsync on, results in the spikes. Shadows enabled on the "Lowest" lighting quality with vsync has no spikes

Edit #2: The spikes actually still appear, but less often. I still get massive "Physics" spikes though

Looking straight up makes the spikes dissapear: (Still not sure what the problem might be...)

Update: 0.28.1 has not changed this bug at all. Also, it seems as if the issue actually originated from 0.26.0 according to what i've tested.

    0.24.1.3 FPS Test:

    0.25.5 FPS Test:

0.26.0 FPS Test (Issue seems to appear in this version):

Also, it seems that even though the issue may have started in 0.26, it has gotten worse in the past 2 major updates.

Okay, so it's definitely something in the map that's causing it. Using the free cam, and going up in the air quite a bit, there are no spikes. Looking in certain directions seems to make the spikes appear, but I cannot figure out where it is originating from (it's probably coming from the map area in general). Again, looking straight up or down removes the spikes completely...

It also seems like getting closer to the ground makes it worse...
