Will there be a version that is for the Mac platform on Steam?

Probably not, the game is meant for Windows. It's not made to run on Macs. The devs are just focusing on the Windows platform right now.

It runs on direct X at the minute, it literally can't run on mac, unless emulated, until that changes.

For official stance on Mac port check FAQ:

Macs are not designed for gaming in the first place. Forget BeamNG.

You can run the DirectX 9 version on Mac using an emulator if you wish, however, that's pretty outdated.

I use BootCamp on my Mac... runs smooth as silk. If you want to game on your Mac, BootCamp is the only real/practical way to do it.

Do you have to buy a copy of Windows to run BootCamp on Mac? I have a friend who wants BeamNG but only has a Mac (and a good one too).

Yes, you will need a copy of Windows. Unfortunately it is expensive, but it is worth it just for the games alone.
