this is the 7 forum ive posted it on. Not a single reply on any of them
since this is the game that my 660 chokes on I will ask here:

recently i bought a used gtx 660 for £45, and my expectations were low anyway, but now its getting on my blo*dy nerves. On BeamNG.drive 1080p at the lowest settings possible the 660 musters barely 30 fps. But here the thing. if i turn the res down to 600x480p all on low, i get just over 60fps. my processor isnt bottlenecking it at 16% load....on a pentium g4560..., whereas the 660 is at 100% all the time. I tried overclocking it using MSI afterburner but the settings wont apply. I also had a GTX 460 before this that performed wayy better. Is there a problem here or is it just the kepler archetectures awful performance??
    plz help

On the steam page it says that you require atleast a GTX 780, how much tasks are your computer running? This game is known to be sort of GPU heavy.

Also having a Pentium G4560 doesn't help much either. BeamNG prefers to have a lot of CPU cores

I had that card, and its DirectX11 performance is quite terrible.

    There's no DirectX12 mode, game uses DirectX11.
Any in case that card only support up to DirectX11 (poorly, again)

okay. I was thinking about upgrading my ram to dual channel. will that make an noticeable difference?

That will not help if GPU is what is limiting you.

With CPU it can be that total CPU load is let's say 16%, but one core is at 100%, it can be that one core is hitting peak constantly, but task manager shows something like 60%, so it gets some experience to figure it out if GPU or CPU is the limit.

With GPU something like MSI afterburner can show load quite well and if you get near to 100% load, then it is quite safe to assume GPU being the limit.

With Ryzen 7 you would benefit from dual channel memory, but it might not help if you are GPU limited.

Because changing resolution helps with fps, it sounds like your GPU just can't keep up.

1050Ti, 960 or something like that might be what helps, especially with Ryzen 7.

but ive seen on youtube a gtx 660 hitting 60fps on 'normal' settings with an AMD a8 or something. I can barely hit 30 on 'lowest' settings

Would check clock speeds and temps, cpu utilization per core, also using Catzilla, 3d mark etc. to check performance being what to except.

If there is some other program, like windows defender using cpu it can be stealing lot of fps.

I just checked MSI afterburner, and the core and memory clock are both 350mhz... which is really low for a 660

don't get a GTX 960, it's not enough, and a bit of a waste of money, buy nice or buy twice, get something a little bit meatier, and don't buy a 2gb card, I did that and it's a real bottleneck.

I wonder if your card is a broken or a fake.

There could be something else too, but I don't know about low clock issues other than if card is running too hot or is damaged and throttling so much, but again don't know about 660 if that has such clock lowering features.

Well, at least there is now some reason for poor performance.

Hmm, from power options, I guess you have chosen max performance, also from nvidia control panel?

    Is the card overclocked?
GPUs (at least Nvidia ones) will lock themselves to low clock speed if an overclock is unstable.
Use MSI Afterburner or similar and revert your card speeds to their stock settings, and check again.
Also note that the speed will increase when the card is under use, they don't run full speed all the time.

That card should be quite well in performance wise, if your PSU just has enough wattage to it.

Price is around same used 1050Ti sells here, kinda envy of that :p

Yeah run a game/furmark and report back the clocks, if it doesn't increase then the cooler might be bad, check the temps.

Maxwell cards, like mine, have an idle clock of roughly 135 MHz
