GTA 4 was just like many multiplatform games of last gen, developed on a PC targeting console dev kits, so they were coding on the pc and running the code on a devkit. They then port the console version to the PC. GTA 4 ran like crap on everything, so the PC port wasn't as bad as people make it out to be since it never ran well in the first place. But ofc the PC port was hardly amazing either. But i was still playing it on the 360 for a while after the PC port was published so i have no experience of how bad it may have been originally.

GTA IV was the same shit. Look at some of the first screenshots released and the first trailer, the textures are insanely detailed in a few spots where in the final they're not as detailed. Not to mention the timecyc and car reflections. Was definitely done for the PC.

nope, neither of us are correct

most game devs (EA, ubishit, all that) are lazy these days and develop their code against an SDK which can deploy to either consoles or PC

Yacht is a troll. It's best to ignore him because it just makes him even more mad. He might be a sociopath.

I haven't looked because time etc but i wouldn't be surprised if they were just animated. They would just take game assets and then arrange them how they like and render it out. Its one reason many trailers state that they don't contain in game footage, it because it is not rendered in the game engine.

Trailers and adverts sell games. Most games companies know this so they are willing to put a lot of time and effort into making the trailers. Just take a look at how some companies make trailers that look nothing like the game that are 100% animated with no in game assets used. All rockstar would need to do is put a bit of extra into those specific assets purely for a trailer and animate it all to look like its in game.

I think you're the mad one here, accusing people of being sociopaths and trolls. I was trying to prove a point.

I don't know, those screens could be either renders or actual ingame footage. Would have to analyze them more.

It's like using Unity as a game engine. You use a terrible engine because it does porting for you.

Unity: Works like shit on all platforms!

Wouldn't call it lazy. The question in development is: Do we have to reinvent the wheel or can we use an existing one? Also in 3D rendering engines if you would do it yourself you probably will do it way worse without optimizations than the people doing that for years. So for small dev studios the decision is clear to use existing engines like T3D, JME, Unity, etc.

You tend to find that AAA studios use their own proprietary engines rather than off the shelf ones.

But in general, they tend to have 1 engine with multiple deployment options. Doesn't always work though. Had a talk from Exient recently, they found their own off the shelf setup had one of the recent angry birds games (which they now program for rovio) running fine on mobile but at 4 fps on an Xbox one (which their toolchain supports), reason, bug in Microsoft's stdlib implementatikn for Xbox one, same bug was apparently also present on PS4 implementation but less severe (yielding a playable game on ps4). Patch around using the dodgy stdlib function, gameplay is improved on both platforms (they apparently dropped to assembly for the patch so no mobile support there, besides the iOS and android stdlib implementations are damn solid).

Unity is even lazier though. It runs mostly under .NET/Mono. They can rely on somebody else providing the .NET CLR implementation to adapt between platforms.

But in general. 1 codebase, change a drop down to change platform. Hit compile. Only go and fix what is broken for each platform and you are sorted. Optimisation, fuck that shit.

Stock GTA IV is the best IV. Car mods don't really fit the art direction of IV either, they're too high poly. Stuff like what that Carrythxd guy does to IV is disgusting. Car mods crash lobbies online and cause the SMPA60 error as well.

You're one of the people stuck on console then? I'm really not sure what you mean when you say they don't fit the art direction, isn't the whole point of the car designs in GTA since the beginning to look quite similar to real cars and the game to be set in a realistic setting similar to a city in reality? Car mods crash your game in multiplayer but they won't crash lobbies and you aren't even able to load them, trainer mods or anything that changes main game files into lobbies unless the host allows it. And that error has occurred to me maybe twice in like 3 years of modding the game, its caused by a crappy mod 99% of the time, just un-install the mod...

Stuck on console? You're busting my chops right? I got a GTX 760, I7 3770 and 8gb of RAM. I emulate all my console games.
As far as the art direction remark goes, I mean they're too high poly to fit the other scenery in the game. Even more so on the Renderware engine games (3, VC and SA)

Fair enough, but does that mean that you also dislike icEnhancer and HD texture packs?

You do you seem to play like some of the oldest games with crazy bad aspect ratios, but ok :p

And in GTA 4 the scenery and the city around is defiantly more high poly and detailed compared to that in Forza or Gran Turismo, etc.

Like stuff like this just fits into GTA fine.

(Crappy old screenshot of mine but yeah)

And yeah the new Icehancer is by far the best graphics mod atm, but reality IV is ok.

    I prefer RealityIV.

So you're one of those consumerist conformist types that instantly assume "old=bad" and "new=good". Nice. And that aspect ratio remark is fucking ridiculous. I suppose I should play all my PCSX2 games at 640x480 aka the native PS2 resolution? Don't have time for widescreen .pnach files either.

Ever since you first got on this forum people have been telling you to get the stick out of your ass. Please dislodge it, makes you read too far into things and get offended by it.
