You can disable smoke & other ambient occlusion effects by disabling SMAA from the settings

SMAA is a method of anti-aliasing and has nothing to do with smoke? However playing with HDR setting might disable tire smoke.

SMAA is just the anti-aliasing option.
Disabling it should not impact anything else apart aliasing.

I stand corrected, disabling SMAA doesn't affect smoke or other such effects.

However, when i disabled SSAO and HDR, all smoke effects disappeared, but when i enabled SSAO and HDR and disabled them again, they reappeared.

Sorry for any inconvenience caused by my previous reply.

    It's the HDR doing that.
Some particles needs it enabled. If it's disabled, those particles will not appear.

The HDR setting is in the Graphics Options
