Wouldn't it be nice if you could reduce the GPU overhead by lowering the internal resolution independent from the overall screen/window resolution?

I have seen it in ETS2 I run 3840x2160 on my GPU but downscale it to 1920x1080 its something the 900 series does for gaming to get better graphics quality

End effect is similar to anti aliasing. Looks better than anti aliasing, but its so computationally expensive.

Isn't it practically the same as nvidia DVR or whatever it's called?

I know, I run my game on 16x AA I know I am giving up FPS but I prefer the cars to look smoother, but for what I can get with the FPS limiters turned off I get upwards of 100fps so AA doesnt really take up much in FPS for me...but everyone is different...

Yes however a few games do support it natively now. Star wars battlefront and ARMA 3 for example.

DVR also only allows rendering to higher than native resolutions in fullscreen. Both SWB and ARMA implementations work in windowed & fullscreen modes with resolutions both above and below final render resolution.

I used it in battlefront beta because my 1gb VRAM card crashed at 1080p resolutions, whereas if I scaled the render resolution to 75%, it then ran fine. Bonus, AA and UI are still calculated on the 1080p image not the 75% res one so the AA can also compensate for some of the stretching from the lower to higher resolution and the HUD doesnt distort or anything (which it has been known to be drawn incorrectly under DVR).

I guess it depends on the graphics card you run if you can super-scale or not

For most GPUs I'd say it's unfeasible.

I see what you mean yeah I think its the top end cards that can do scaling better I think

Helps the 980Ti has 6GB Vram.

Yeah I superscale the ETS2 and American Truck Simulator and I get about 60fps easily in both games so yeah the 980Ti is the card to go for, the Titan X isnt because the cost of it vs that its an upscaled 980Ti is another factor :)

most if not all desktop nvidia gpus can supersample or whatever, if your GPU supports DSR then you can set it in the 3d control panel, if not then go to resoloution and custom resoloution in the Nvidia control panel, set your parameters and leave the preset tab to auto, it should supersample, then reboot your pc and that resoloution should show in game, although it does distort the UI, if you have a high res monitor (say mines 1920x1200) then you can set a custom res 1/2 of your native, (800x600) and it will look good, but big. awesome if you have a CRT as you can have any old resoloution and they will display it (within range)
