Did old bumpers peel? Or was the plastic itself colored? I always assumed that bumper was metal but now I had to check and yup it's plastic.
That works! Maybe invert the texture on the bumper, so that the brunt of the surface is painted while cracks remain black.
Looking good in the pics (although I can't check out the mod at the moment). I agree about improving the bumper. Here are some of my thoughts: Body plastics come in various colors under the paint. My current car is silver colored and uses dark (slate/black) plastics under the silver paint. Other cars I've had used off-white or even colored plastic under the paint. I think I've seen red colored plastic for molding for example. Bumpers might always be the dark stuff, I'm not certain. Here is a comparable car to the Fullsize which features a trim strip on the front bumper. The trim strip has peeled/flaked on this Mercury Grand Marquis and the trim strip is clearly a light color underneath the grey paint: link / backup link Age damage isn't just peeling, it's also fading, flaking of layers, cracking/crazing. See the following link for those types of damage on a comparable vehicle (a Ford Crown Victoria). Also note that the bumper is actually black plastic: DirtyVictoria - Bumper Repair and Repaint Finally, just rust isn't all there is to it! It's actually much more common to see primer where paint has flaked away from the primer rather than primer flaking away from the bare metal. After the primer is exposed for a long time you often start to see a rusty discoloration, then eventually full-blown rust spots. See these links (a few of which do show minor rust as well as just exposed primer): http://www.autobodyfremont.com/2014/11/2006-crown-victoria-paintjob.html https://www.aarbids.com/servlet/Search.do?auctionId=1370&itemId=4627 News 5 Cleveland - Elyria cop cars new paint http://www.carcomplaints.com/Mercury/Grand_Marquis/2006/body_paint/paint_peeling.shtml https://twitter.com/maryannthompson/status/578748664673239040
Most manufacturers make bumpers in black, so that replacement parts can either be used as they are or painted at the body shop. EDIT - typos

Who bothers touching up the paint on a crown vic?... especially a 15 year old one lol The next step would be to male the floors/frame weaker from the rust.
