As a newb to this game, I'm finding controlling the game to do what I want to be the main early challenge. What control tips do you have for moving around and manipulating objects?

    First (ultra-basic) tip:
    • Press ESC to bring up the menu on the side. Click the Controls section (looks like a d-pad). Tick the 'show advanced options' box and go to town.

I'll start. I always have my hands on WASD and the mouse, and didn't like moving my hands around to do basic things like change camera angles and time controls. So I rewired it!

Set Camera controls to WASD: I found it a total pain to switch my hand over to the arrow keys for camera control. So I set basic camera controls (forward, back, left, right) to the WASD keys + Shift:
    • For each of the camera controls mentioned, I added a new control of Shift + <key>. For example: Camera Forward now equals Shift + W, Camera Left = Shift + A, and so on.
    • Shift was already bound to 'move camera quickly', so I removed that binding. Because I have a mouse with several buttons, I added this: Move Camera Quickly = Middle Mouse Button.
This means when I'm viewing a sweet jump or stunt I don't have to move my hands to control the camera - I just hit Shift and control the view like normal.

Set Slow/Speed Time control to mouse buttons: I found the Alt + Left/Right controls too far from my car controls, so I set them to my mouse thumb buttons.
    • I use Slow Time constantly, so I set it to my biggest thumb button. It's right there when the perfect moment hits.
    • Speed Time is on the next mouse thumb button up. Easy.

I have very old Logitech Cordless Rumble Pad 2 which I use as my wheel is broken.

Developers of this game are simply amazing as I got help with setting this up so that I can stand on brake despite having combined throttle and brake setup.

This thing has two analog controls with 4 axis total, I have throttle, brake and steering on right side analog control set up as following.

Throttle, RZAXIS, Filter direct, Sensitivity 1, Deadzone begin 0, Deadzone end 0.5, Inverted Yes
Brake, RZAXIS, Filter direct, Sensitivity 1, Deadzone begin 0, Deadzone end 0.5, Inverted No
    Brake, Button 4, Filter direct
Steering, Filter direct, Sensitivity 2.5, Deadzone begin 0, Deadzone end 0, Inverted No
    Parking brake, Button 5
    Shift up, button 7
    Shift down, button 6

Setting filter to direct is probably best improvement I had when playing with controls and separating combined thorttle/brake on separate controls is really nice, helps with drag racing and also with many other foolish things one may like to practice in game as you can brake and throttle at same time.

There is lot more buttons, but I haven't really taken time to set them for anything useful, might set camera functions inspired by this thread, thanks!
