    Hello,

I plan on using BeamNG.drive to teach some friends of mine how to drive a stickshift. I have a logitech G27 wheel with shifter and pedals. Currently, everything feels amazing (great job, developers!) except for one thing: even with clutch assist turned off, you can shift gears with no clutch input.

I'm aware from a post on reddit that shifting with no clutch eventually damages the gearbox. However, from a training standpoint, it fails to create good shifting habits. The added realism will not only improve training capabilities, but will also fit in well with the game's highly realistic nature.

I was personally hoping for some kind of shift lock-out, where the transmission simply does not enter gear unless the clutch is depressed properly. On my reddit post, /u/Serzarit mentioned that a grinding sound would also increase training realism.

The current system is amazingly accurate for driving a manual transmission if you know what you're doing. However, if BeamNG were to be used as a training programs for a manual transmission vehicle by someone who has never driven a manual transmission before, it would fall short due to the lack of realistic shifting mechanics when shifting without a clutch.

And, because this whole "semi-formal" thing is a bit stressing for me, and I like to keep the mood lightened up a bit, here's a few relevant emojiis. :):cool::D

    Thanks for reading!

You are trying to teach stick yet unaware that you can shift a stick without using a clutch?

I know there was some mod that added obnoxious grinding sound when changing gear without clutch on mode without clutch assist. Maybe you could use that? And just like SixSixSevenSeven said: you can change gears without clutch, one needs some skills to do so but it's perfectly possible. Gear slides out quite nicely and to avoid grinding you needs to rev match the engine to fit the revolution speed of the output shaft. gg ez (not really but still)

I would not learn a new driver that technique. @PolishPetrolhead
Just do the normal clutch shifting, it is better for newbs and the advantage of shifting without clutch is not that big during everyday driving.

@Blijo yeah, i know it's a bad idea for newbies to learn that. I just stated it's doable. Also I mentioned a mod giving grinding sound for OP to use, I can't find it tho

Dont use a game. Seriously, there's little to no damage to a manual car if you grind the gears some bit. Just use your car unless its a sports/collection car or pick an under 1k cheap used manual car as a practice shitbox.
