When skidding sideways on dirt in real life, the tires would tend to dig in and cause a rollover. That's one thing that's missing in this otherwise great physics simulator. Currently dirt acts more like a slippery hard surface.
That's true however it would be a tad bit hard to implement since the terrain acts as a solid ground with variable grip instead of actual dirt.
Variable grip is all we need, one that increases with the duration of the skid (as more dirt gets "dug up" by the tires).
This is already in the game. On the gridmap there is a great example of this. Next to the large tunnels, there is an area with long strips of various terrain, including deep mud and sand. If you enter these areas while sliding at a good rate of speed, the tires get buried in the terrain and flip the car. This is also in other places, such as the shorelines of Dry Rock Island and Jungle Rock Island.
Good point. But I'd still like to see some of that (to a lesser extent) on the regular dirt textures too. Since it's already in the game with the soft sand, this shouldn't be difficult to add.
You don’t flip over skidding on dirt... Just went to the beach today in a Jeep and slid around on sand covered parking lots, then went and drifted on dirt roads. One of he most top heavy vehicles in the world, and didn’t ever think I was gonna flip. It would have to be really soft dirt/borderline mud to flip.
No, a few hard bumps & medium rocks will make just about any SUV flip if it's going sideways. Here in Nevada I see reports of rollovers in the desert quite frequently (when drivers overcorrect and their vehicles go off the highway). Real deserts are not silky smooth like those in BeamNG.
