1. A police bullhorn At the moment, there isn't any horn similar to the ones used on police vehicles IRL. It'd be fitting and add more variety if a police bullhorn were to be added. It would be something similar to this 2. Better looking roadblocks I think roadblocks could certainly use improvements. Though I don't expect vanilla spike strips anytime soon, Barriers at roadblocks would be great 3. Background radio chatter and police megaphone Basic stuff pretty much. There should be radio chatter while you are being chased by police as it'd be great. Sound samples here There's also police megaphone sound effects that could randomly play when a police car is in a specific proximity of you. Sound samples seem to be mostly unusable(police department mention, swear words, and generic anger), however there are some usable ones in this, and sounds could be edited and cut. The biggest worry is copyright... Police chases could be better with improvements.
the problem with police chatter is it doesn't make sense digetically for you to hear it if you're the suspect, unless you have a police scanner. and then comes the problem of making it functional. radio chatter was only added to NFS because it gave you gameplay help, preempting roadblocks, knowing where they're searching for you, etc. and on the flipside, if you're the police chasing a suspect, and the police cars with you aren't communicating at all, the non-functionality of the radio becomes even more obvious. of course, if you've ever looked into how the NFS police chatter system works, it's ridiculously complicated, having to piece together what road you're on, what colour and type of car you're in, whether you committed speeding, hit & run, a bank robbery, etc. as well as all the running updates during the pursuit, all while giving it enough variance to make it not seem too repetitive. then comes the problem of having multiple maps- do you re-record every voice line in italian, german, etc. or do you just recycle the american-english lines even when you're in italy?
There are quite a lot of games that let you hear the police chatter as suspect, I don't see a problem with that. I was thinking of a more so background noise kind of radio chatter, rather than a complicated Police communication system, as that would take a lot of work. The current beta radio system can play sounds with very high quality(see 'radio test' in UI apps). Still, it's not impossible to have a system like that. If an AI police car is about to ram you it would play a 'Going in for the hit' line. car model and color system are used in almost every game with a police system, the real question is how it'd process a modded car. As for the different maps, it could simply be a different accent, Not everyone can understand Italian or german, can they?
Obvious issue with this idea: having to hire voice actors. And it would also feel out of place, it would be the only spoken lines in the entire game. And additionay it makes zero sense for a random person to have access to the police radio. Generally stuff like this feels like it belongs in an arcade game and this is a simulator.
My defense for the idea: Sound samples for this exist online for free. It would just be background noise(you wouldn't notice). For the last one, it's a slippery slope between having absolutely no arcade features and going completely off the rails into the arcade category. Realistic vehicle physics with some misc arcade features like this would be fine IMO. Most games with police chases in them are pretty much arcade-style.
so at this point, the devs are paying for audio samples, then spending a bunch of time mixing and programming them in, so that we can have completely non-functional random police chatter, and any old person that doesn't have a radio scanner can still hear it, and any police that should be able to hear it can't glean any useful information from it?
But what about those speakers from which, when chasing, a policeman can say: "police, pull over to the curb! "
If you don't agree, that's fine. However, I'd like to not make this an endless argument back and forth. Also That's all. --- Post updated --- My guess is, he doesn't have a problem with that. Megaphone quotes are common in quite a lot of games with police chases. Bullhorns? literally just need to add an extra horn. better-looking roadblocks are straightforward.
We already have a system of barriers from police cars, but we also have fences with the inscription "the road is closed " they do not affect productivity so much, I think it would be cool to add them to them
I forgot to mention concrete barriers. They are very strong and can actually stop a car. It would make police chases harder, though. I have also thought of police using spike strips, but that is unlikely due to spike strips being not implemented yet.
Concrete barriers are kinda unrealistic, I mean how would they carry them to the blockade, they are too heavy
Fair point No chance of the D-series carrying it Almost fit inside the H-series, but not quite. Then 2 saw horse barriers fit inside with no problem 2 plastic barriers also fitted in nicely I guess this should be limited to plastic barriers and saw-horse barriers.
Speaking of blockades, On WCUSA there should be (simplified) retracted bollards that would be enabled if you are being chased by police(2nd heat level). Locations could be alleyways, some intersections, and highway entrances/exits.
If you're wanted and all police cars on the map are far away, there should be ambient distant police sirens playing until you evade the police or a police car comes into proximity.
Lots of this would go great as mods.. I believe a good portion of what you have mentioned is already a mod. (bullhorn from siren mods) The radio chatter is a neat idea. Definitely doable as a mod though, would take lots of coding to get the game to understand the use of each audio file for it to replicate the feels of games that uses this.. But yeah when it comes to sirens, Vanilla sirens have reverb, echoing effects that can be heard from about 5 blocks away though when you swap that siren to a custom modded siren: no reverb at all, the audible distance is shorter.. Only Fade-In and, Fade-out for the custom siren and half-the-time the doppler effect doesn't function on them. I wonder why? I would love to get custom sirens to reverb and echo just as the vanilla sirens. Oh and, increase the audible range heard. Wonder what I'd have to edit in the files to make this feat a reality?
I don't feel like this is a good idea. Hearing police sirens while out of audible range of all vehicles isn't realistic at all and I don't see how this is supposed to add to the gameplay either. If anything you do even lose the information that you are currently safe. If for whatever reason you need constant confimation that you are being chased activate the UI app. Maybe the siren sound range needs to be inceased a bit, but I don't want to see a constant siren ambience sound implemented.
Emergency Sirens are loud, they're meant to be heard from very far away. Can you tell me how this makes you lose information? in fact, it would let you know that police is out of range and that you need to hide. In my opinion, increasing it only a bit is way too less. An audible range for the distant sirens as well perhaps? maybe that would be realistic.
This is already a thing with all of the vanilla audio. Everything from horns, engines, tires and sirens are heard from different distances, Sirens and tire screeches being the farthest. There is also reverb and echoing that is included. I'm unsure how it works in-game as if you use a custom siren or horn, the distance heard isn't the same: it's very short range such as less than one city block with the audio only fading in/fading out. Also, there isn't any reverb or echoing unless you are physically in a tunnel or under an overpass. But, Vanilla audio works exactly as you described. You can hear police sirens from one side of Belasco City to the other side using vanilla sirens. Correct me if I'm wrong people.
Oh! Tested it out, and seems you're right! Though the siren should be more audible at far distances. Bullhorns, Just recently found out that those are bundled with siren mods. The only mod I found before was an outdated one from boeing727flier. Radio chtter might be easy, maybe something like this? Code: If playerwantedlevel = >1 then radioscript activate Speakerphone quotes, though? no idea if that's possible through mods. Same with roadblock props.
Megaphone/radio chatter dialog is possible though I doubt anyone in the BeamNG community would mod that into the game without asking for compensation. -I could be wrong on that. You see, these use hundreds and even thousands of audio samples. Each sample is a single word or number spoken as well as variations and some are combinations of words and numbers. In the end, the game it's designed for blends these samples together in real time seamlessly so the dialog sounds natural though, behind the scenes there is lots of labor behind it.. And, that's just the audio production/organizing. I'm unsure how the coding would work though I'd assume there's a way to code it with LUA. What a modder would most likely do is just port megaphone/radio chatter dialog from a game with a huge, accessible sample library which, is easy. Here's an example of just how vast these sample libraries are just for dialog. This is from GTAV.
